As one of the residential colleges affiliated with the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LA&PS), Founders College combines a strong emphasis on academic excellence with a commitment to the development of its members as well-rounded individuals. The theme of the College is “Self, Culture & Society,” which reflects the special interest of the College in the disciplines of Anthropology, Canadian Studies, East Asian Studies, Environmental Studies, European Studies, French Studies, Geography, German Studies, Health and Society, History, Human Rights & Equity Studies, Italian Studies, Languages, Literatures & Linguistics, Portuguese Studies, Race, Ethnicity,and Indigeneity, Russian Studies, Sexuality Studies, Social Work, Spanish, Urban Studies, and Women’s Studies (School of).
Founders College supports and houses the African Studies Program, the International Development Studies Program, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, the South Asian Studies Program and the graduate program in Development Studies. Some of the student academic clubs of these departments and programs are housed in the College.
Founders also houses the Mariano A. Elia Chair in Italian-Canadian Studies, the Nellie Langford Rowell Library, The Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African Peoples, the Canadian Women Studies Journal/les cahiers de la femme and the School of Women’s Studies. These units, along with the Fellows, the support staff and the student organizations, contribute to the dynamic intellectual life of the College.
