Degree Options & Requirements

The Specialized Honours program in Speech and Language Sciences in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics offers students a unique and focused pre-professional curriculum.

Like all other Specialized Honours programs at York, which have rigorous coursework requirements, the Honours BA in Speech and Language Sciences is a stand-alone degree, which cannot be combined with any other major or minor. It consists of 57-credit requirements combining courses offered by AP/Linguistics, HH/Psychology, and HH/Kinesiology and includes courses that are pre-requisites for admission to speech-language pathology programs/graduate community college programs in Canada. Choose the checklist for the year you began your study. These checklists do not provide official confirmation of your eligibility to graduate.

Checklists

Continuing in the Speech and Language Sciences program:

To continue in the Speech and Language Sciences program, students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 5.00 (C+) as well as at least a 6.00 (B) average in all 57 Speech and Language Sciences required credits in order to remain in the program.

Grade point averages are assessed after each regular Fall/Winter session. Students who do not satisfy the grade and average requirements noted above will be given a term probationary period, at the end of which the grade point average will be reassessed. If the grade and average requirements are not satisfied, students will be removed from the Speech and Language Sciences program and offered admission to Linguistics Program or must then select another degree.

Transferring from a different program at York:

Students can apply to transfer into the Speech and Language Sciences program from another program provided they have a cumulative GPA of 6.00 (B) with a minimum of grade of B in LING courses. In order to process a transfer to Speech and Language Sciences, students will need to:

  1. Submit a program major change request via the Registrar’s Office;
  2. Formally apply by emailing a 1-page statement of interest (including name, student number, and email address) to the Undergraduate Program Director of Linguistics (lapsling@yorku.ca). The application deadline is May 10.
