Forbes magazine ranked the Schulich School of Business at York University number one in Canada for post-MBA return on investment (ROI) in all one-year and two-year MBA programs.

The Forbes “Best Business Schools” global ranking is conducted every two years and measures the earning power of MBA graduates.

Schulich was also ranked number one in the world in the Years to Payback category (the length of time it takes an MBA graduate to recoup their investment), and was also among the leading schools worldwide in the 5-Year MBA Gain category.

“The ROI provided by a Schulich MBA degree was once again rated by Forbes as the best in Canada and one of the very best in the world among all two-year MBA programs,” said Schulich Dean Dezsö J. Horváth. “For many MBA students, the return on investment they receive after graduating is a significant factor when determining the value of their degree.”

The ROI ranking looked at MBA graduates from the Class of 2010 five years after earning their degrees. Forbes surveyed 17,400 MBA graduates from 95 business schools around the world and calculated the ROI using two different measures.

The first ROI measure, known as the 5-Year MBA Gain, was arrived at by determining average post-MBA compensation over a five-year period minus the costs associated with attending business school (tuition, fees and foregone salary). The 5-Year MBA Gain was then adjusted to account for cost of living expenses in different parts of the world.

The second ROI measure, known as Years to Payback, determined the average length of time it took for graduates to recoup their investment in an MBA degree

According to the Forbes ranking results, Schulich had the highest 5-Year MBA Gain among all MBA programs in Canada, with Schulich graduates reporting an average 5-Year MBA Gain of $59,200 USD (post-MBA compensation over a five-year period, minus the costs associated with attending business school.)

Based on the 5-Year MBA Gain, Schulich was ranked ninth overall among all two-year MBA programs outside the U.S.

In Forbes’ second ROI measure, the Years to Payback category, which measures how quickly graduates recoup their investment in an MBA degree (foregone income and tuition costs), Schulich ranked number one in the world among all two-year MBA programs with a payback period of three years for graduates to recoup their investment – a position it shares jointly with the National University of Singapore.

“The fact that Schulich is rated number one in the world in the Years To Payback category, the amount of time it takes graduates to recoup their investment, is a testament to the real value and earning potential of a Schulich MBA degree,” said Horváth.

Among all Canadian schools in both the one-year MBA and two-year MBA categories, Schulich was number one for both 5-Year MBA Gain and Years to Payback. Schulich graduates also experienced the highest percentage salary increase among all Canadian schools, with Schulich alumni from the Class of 2010 reporting a 145 per cent increase in average salary five years following graduation, according to Forbes.
