We are excited you have chosen York Residences to be your “home” for the next year!

We look forward to welcoming you to the safe and exciting residence community at York University’s Keele Campus. Despite current events, living in residence is an incredible opportunity and we hope that residence becomes your home away from home for the next few months.

As the Fall Term is just around the corner, we would like to remind you that the Housing & Conference Services and Residence Life teams here to assist your transition into campus life and to connect you with the campus resources to help you succeed. Please find important information pertaining to your residence experience below.

What To Bring/Not Bring

Storage is limited in residence, so you are encouraged to bring only the essentials. We've compiled a list for your convenience!

Move-In Steps

Step 1: Schedule Move-In Date

Move-in day will look a little bit different this year! To allow for proper physical distancing during move-in, you will need to book a move-in appointment. The move-in period for Keele will begin on August 24th. A maximum of two (2) persons can accompany you into your residence and assist with your move during your scheduled move-in appointment.

If you are a student arriving from outside of Canada, you have been made aware that the Government of Canada has put in place emergency orders under the Quarantine Act. The Act applies to all travelers arriving in Canada. Travelers arriving in Canada must quarantine for 14 days and comply with all requirements of the quarantine measures.  York International will assist all students arriving from abroad with a place to quarantine off-campus. Information on how you can book your quarantine accommodation have been forwarded on August 7th. *Please note that you must book a move-in on the day after you expect to complete the mandatory quarantine period. For example, if you expect to arrive in Canada on August 12, you should book a move-in date of August 27, 2020.

Housing & Conference Services sent an email on August 11th with a link for you to schedule your move-in appointment. If you cannot find this email, please contact us at There is a maximum number of appointments each day, so if you have a specific day in mind it is important that you submit your request as soon as possible.

If you need to make changes or cancel your move-in appointment you can do so via the links in the confirmation email you will receive after booking.

Step 2: Planning for Move-In Day

Move-in Date - You will receive an email with confirmation of your move-in appointment once you have completed the booking form. It is important to note that you are only eligible to move into your residence during the pre-approved appointment. Early or late arrivals cannot be accommodated.

It’s important that you bring valid government-issued ID or YU-card with you on Move-in Day. To protect your privacy, we are unable to issue keys to parents, relatives, friends or representatives.

You are allowed to have two (2) guests assist you with move-in. We ask that only the student checking in visits the office.

Before you arrive on campus, you will be asked to complete the COVID-19 Screening Checklist. If you or your guest(s) have answered YES to any one of the questions, you or your guest(s) are not to attend any York campus. You and any guests must wear a non-medical mouth and nose covering at all times.

Late Arrivals - If you are unable to make your move-in appointment, please contact Housing Services ( as soon as possible. Any incoming resident who does not check into their room by the first day of classes, and has not notified Housing & Conference Services by email, will lose their room reservation and will incur a no-show fee of $500.00 to their student account.

Step 3: Moving into Residence

Be sure to follow physical distancing procedures and directional signage at all times. You and any guests must wear a non-medical mouth and nose covering at all times.

Arriving to campusUpon arrival to campus, please make your way to your Housing Services Office. We have both an interactive campus map and a move-in specific campus map to assist you. Only the student checking in should visit the office. Please be prepared to show, your YU-card or government issued ID. Once your ID has been verified, you will receive your welcome package which will include your residence access card and room keys.

Proceed to your residence after key pick up.

Arriving at your residence - Upon arrival at your residence, please unload your vehicle and move your vehicle to a nearby parking lot. A cart and sanitizer will be available in the residence lobby should you wish to use this while moving. A maximum of two (2) persons may help with your move. Additional guests must remain outside of the residence.

Step 4: Complete and Submit Your Documents

There are important documents that you need to fully understand, complete/sign and submit:

  • The Electronic Lock Operating Instructions contains essential information on your role in maintaining a safe environment in residence and how to properly take care of your keys and room locks. You will be asked to acknowledge this agreement as you receive your keys.
  • The Undergraduate Residence Room Inventory and Condition Report needs to be completed and submitted within 72 hours of your move-in. As you fill out this form, please ensure that it accurately reflects the condition of the room/unit you are moving in to -  including small damages (if applicable). At the end of your residence contract, upon move out, this document will serve as Housing & Conference Services basis on whether to charge you for damages found in your room/unit upon move out inspection. It is important that you bring to Housing & Conference Services attention any other concerns you may have with your room.

Undergraduate Residence Handbook

By signing your Residence Occupancy Agreement, you agree to abide by the Residence Community Standards, Policies and Procedures, and all other regulations in the Residence Handbook. The Handbook contains valuable information pertaining to living in residence from safety procedures to submitting a work order. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with all the contents of the Handbook.

Staff Members

  • Director, Housing Services has a comprehensive responsibility for all facets of York University residences including but not limited to residence and fees, administrative policies and procedures, personnel matters, facilities, marketing, building operations as well as conference operations for both Keele and Glendon Campuses.
  • Manager, Housing Administration is responsible for developing and implementing strategic admission policies and procedures that are in alignment with the University’s admission and student recruitment strategies. They ensure that a high level of customer service is delivered to all our students and parents while maintaining residence occupancy and operating within budget. The Manager leads the Housing Administration team managing all aspects of the student assignments/admissions processes, facilitating all move-in, transfer and check-out processes.
  • Assignment Coordinators are responsible for administering application, room assignment, room change, withdrawal, and cancellation processes and proactively assign vacant spaces and empty suites as they become available within the Residence. They also regularly communicate to residents and parents through email and provide timely, accurate response based on their needs. Assignment Coordinators also support the Building Operations team in processing/entering work orders damage and cleaning appeals.
  • The Operations Team is responsible for maintaining the housing inventory and all aspects the physical assets in residence. They are comprised of building operations supervisors, repair persons, custodial and seasonal workers who also liaises with maintenance and external stakeholders to coordinate maintenance, repair, work orders and pest control in York residences.
  • The Accommodation and Conference Services team is responsible for managing the day-to-day student and guest relations done at the Front Desk and is overall responsible for the Guest Accommodations business in residence for the entire year. Front Desk Clerks help keep the residence safe and secure, tend to various student needs, fulfill administrative duties, respond to general inquiries, contact Housing Staff as required, receives maintenance requests, and many more.
  • Director of Residence Life is responsible for residence life programs, services and activities. They provide strategic leadership for the comprehensive program using a student-centered approach fostering student success. They are responsible for program design, staffing, training, student support, and the daily operations of the program.
  • Residence Life Coordinators are full-time staff living in residence dedicated to the day to day management of the residence life program in one or more residences. They supervise student staff and oversee educational initiatives, community development, student behaviour and support. They focus on creating a positive residence experience that fosters student success, personal growth and leadership. They are well connected to campus resources, respond to emergencies/student crisis, and address behaviour contrary to residence community standards.
  • Residence Dons are upper-year students who strive to create a welcoming and inclusive residence community. They provide student support, maintain community standards, participate in the Don on Duty rotation, and organize educational and community-building programs to help students succeed. They are trained peer leaders who are knowledgeable about campus and are a great resource for residents as they navigate university and living on campus. Dons are assigned to a house/floor community or residence council.
  • Night Porters are friendly student staff who work in the evenings typically from 7:00pm to 1:00am, monitoring main entrance access, signing guests in and out, and checking out equipment, games and other items for use and enjoyment.
