Land Acknowledgement

York University recognizes that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships with the territories upon which its campuses are located. We acknowledge that our Markham Campus is situated upon traditional territories of the Anishinaabe [An-ish-in-aabe] Peoples and of the Haudenosaunee [hoh-DEE-noh-SHoh-nee] Peoples. These territories are covered by the Upper Canada Treaties. The First Nations community in closest proximity to the City of Markham are the Chippewas [Chip-i-waas] of Georgina Island.

Indigenous Learning Circle

Indigenous Learning Circle

The Indigenous Learning Circle serves as a dedicated space that fosters  reflection, and the sharing of Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and cultures. It provides students, faculty, staff, and community members with a respectful, inclusive space to engage in dialogue, workshops, cultural ceremonies, and events that honour Indigenous ways of knowing and being. The space is designed to promote collaboration and  allyship while offering opportunities for participants to deepen their understanding of Indigenous wholistic practices.

Bookings are required for events, classes and planned ceremonies. Bookings are made through the Temporary Use of University Space (TUSS) preferably two weeks in advance. Information about the process can be found at here.  Please reach out to Tania Bakshi should you require any support.

Multifaith and Reflection Room

Multifaith and Reflection Room

The Multi-faith and Reflection room offers a space for all York University community members for quiet prayers and introspection. This space welcomes students, faculty and staff of any faith or religious background. Bookings are required for events, classes and planned ceremonies. Bookings are made by contacting markhamstudentlife@yorku.ca

Student Accessibility Services (SAS)

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) provides individual academic accommodations for students with permanent or temporary disabilities, in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Policy on accessible education for students with disabilities and the York University Senate policy on Academic Accommodation for Students with Disabilities. Markham Campus has a dedicated accessibility counsellor to provide students with guidance and support (including its own Accommodated Test Centre and Academic Peer Support Assistant that provides academic skills training and campus navigation. The York Federation of Students (YFS) supports five Community Service Groups, Access Centre, ISAY, TBLGAY, USAY, and YUBSA, that advocate for equity and provide resources, events, and safe spaces for marginalized students, including those who are disabled, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, South Asian, or Black, fostering inclusion and community on campus.
