CCY Degree Options & Requirements

In our many courses, you will learn practical techniques to listen to children and discern young people's voices in different contexts. As a CCY student, you will learn what goes into determining the best interests of the child and developing best practices for working with children and young people.

CCY's Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

1.       Students will demonstrate a critical understanding of the key concepts and different theoretical approaches (eg. historical, developmental, anthropological, sociocultural, literary, etc.) in Childhood & Youth Studies, from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives.

2.       Students will apply a range of methods of enquiry that draw on current research in the field to argue and provide an analysis of different topics in Childhood and Youth Studies.

3.       Students will develop and conduct original child- and youth-focused research in the field.

4.       Students will analyze both representations and lived experiences of children, childhood and youth in various media, community settings, and personal experiences.

5.       Students will experience and reflect on course-based and community-focused opportunities designed to provide them insight into important issues that impact young people throughout time and across space.

6.       Students will express their analysis and reflection of different child- and youth- studies topics appropriate for the designated audience.

7.       Students will develop, apply, and transfer academic skills such as critical reading, writing, thinking, research, and collaboration to a range of academic and/or professional contexts.

8.       Students will develop their own arguments about particular issues related to the social, political, and emotional experiences of young people using the concepts and theoretical approaches they’ve developed in the program.

  • One of the 4000-level child-focused CCY courses (6 credits).

In addition, students are required to complete at least 12 credits of departmental/divisional courses relevant to CCY selected in consultation with the program faculty advisor.

It was important for me to have a child-centric BA to supplement my future in education. The Children, Childhood & Youth program was perfect because it provides a theory-based perspective into the lives and social concept of childhood across time and place.
