Student Communications Assistant

Rate of Pay: $17.20 - $17:50 per hour
Employment Term: Summer: May 2025-April 2026
Hours of Work: Summer: Up to 23 hours per week; Fall/Winter: Up to 15 hours per week
Job Description:
The Student Communications Assistant is responsible for content creation for the LA&PS Colleges Instagram, editing student articles for the weekly LA&PS Voices Blog, curating the annual ‘The Quadrant’ Journal, and designing branded event posters. In addition, the Student Communications Assistant will work collaboratively with the larger work-study student team to create promotional and student life content to be shared through other platforms. The purpose of this role is to highlight the diversity of our students, as well as to increase student engagement through promotion of various events, activities and opportunities for LA&PS Students. This role will report to the Student Engagement Team, LA&PS Colleges.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
LA&PS Colleges Instagram
- Plan and create engaging social media content
- Support the development of social media strategies
- Research existing social media trends and best practices to use for LA&PS branded content
- Ensure that all content and materials adhere to LA&PS brand standards
- Collaborate with LA&PS Communications, LA&PS Colleges Student Engagement Team, and Work-Study Student Team.
- Other duties as assigned
LA&PS Voices Blog
- Recruiting and organizing LA&PS volunteers
The Quadrant Journal
- Produce blog articles and content regularly for the academic year.
- Recruit contributions from volunteer writers/photographers and follow up on tasks assigned for completion.
- Cover LA&PS Colleges events and conduct interviews within the LA&PS Colleges community.
- Write stories/articles for the blog that promote student engagement
- Take photographs as needed.
- May be asked to assist with creating or editing various community videos.
- Other duties as assigned
General Student Engagement Support
- Assist with the creation of marketing and digital advertising materials
- Preparing event posters to be posted in designated promotion areas
- Submitting event listings and poster images to various community partners for additional promotion
- Other duties as assigned

The Work-Study Student program provides on-campus job opportunities for eligible York University undergraduate students. Work-Study Student employees are provided opportunities to contribute to support roles while developing valuable, relevant skills and work experience for the workplace. These roles offer a learning and development opportunity for Work-Study Student employees to receive experiential on-the-job training, guidance and mentorship. Under the guidance of permanent staff members, Work/Study Student employees will provide support to their relevant department/faculty in clerical, administrative and technical capacities. Qualifications:
- Current full-time undergraduate York University student.
- Work-study eligible
- Experience writing articles and/or creating content for social media and/or event promotions
- Experience working as a team and independently.
- Experience in video making/editing is an asset.
Skills:
- Exceptional written communication skills
- Excellent oral communication skills
- Superior attention to detail and ability to exercise good judgement
- High proficiency using Microsoft Word, Publisher and/or PowerPoint
- Ability to communicate with others to explain and share information.
- Ability to creatively write content to engage an intended audience
- Ability to use social and digital media to effectively communicate or respond to others.
- Ability to meet deadlines and organize time effectively
- Ability to use various design software (Canva, Publisher) and social media platforms.
- Ability to learn and use a variety of computer applications.
