Microeconomics Class: Government Policies

Tuesday, March 12 | 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Prof. Karen Bernhardt-Walther

A core result in economics states that the free market maximizes overall welfare. What exactly does this mean? And if the free market is so awesome, what do we need the government for? In this class, you will witness a discussion of how free markets can fail and when government intervention or regulation can be useful. This is a regular class offered to our first-year students as part of our first-year microeconomics course. It involves interactive iClicker questions that only registered students can respond to. Welcome to your first economics class at York!

Macroeconomics Class: Exchange Rates

Thursday, March 14 | 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Prof. Sadia Malik, Prof. Jinyue Li, and Prof. Robert McKeown

When we travel abroad, we naturally exchange one currency for another. Our travel patterns shape the demand and supply for currencies and thus the exchange rates. Other – more important factors that affect the exchange rate – include imports and exports of goods, as well as currency speculation. In this class, you can see how economists think about currencies and exchange rates. This is a regular class offered to our first-year students as part of their first-year macroeconomics course. It involves interactive iClicker questions that only registered students can respond to. Welcome to your first economics class at York!
