Overview
Mathematics for Education is designed for students considering a career in teaching. You can apply to York’s concurrent education program or take a one-year consecutive education program. This BA or BSc program offers a broader background in mathematics than the other Mathematics program and encourages you to develop a wide perspective on mathematics and on the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Courses or a minor for a second teachable subject can be included conveniently. There is an ongoing shortage of qualified mathematics teachers in Ontario, and across North America. This program offers excellent preparation for admission to Education programs and for future success in a teaching career, while preserving the options to transfer to other mathematics programs after second year if you so choose.
Example First-Year Courses
Below are some courses you may take in your first year. Please note that this is only an example, your actual course schedule may be different
- Linear Algebra I
- Linear Algebra II
- Applied Calculus I
- Applied Calculus II
- Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science
- Introduction to Statistics I
- Electives for a second teaching variable
The Math & Stats programs at York are designed so you can switch between our programs in the first three semesters and still finish your degree on time.
Careers
Mathematics for Education helps you develop the skills you need for your teaching career through practical experiences. Recent students have worked on pedagogical research projects on topics like experiential learning, curriculum development and design, peer mentorship and supervision, technology in the classroom, graduate student teaching training, and incoming student background preparation, all in relation to mathematics and statistics. You will have paid, volunteer, and course-credit opportunities to get involved, give back, and develop your teaching and coaching skills, as a peer mentor, peer tutor, or study group facilitator.
Additionally, all York Science students are eligible for co-op opportunities through the Co-op and Career Centre. This office offers support services to students looking to engage in experiential learning and career preparation, including co-op and internship workshops, resume help, interview prep, and much more.
Career Possibilities
This program is designed for those who wish to enter a career in mathematics education, but the program’s flexibility will give you the knowledge and skills to work in any industry looking for strong computational, analytical and communication skills.
