Number of Positions Available: 2 (number of positions are subject to budgetary approval)

Type of Position: Paid

Rate of Pay: $18.00 per hour

Employment Term: 1 Position SU 24; F24; W25 1 Position F24; W25

Hours of Work: Summer: Up to 35 hours per week Fall/Winter: Up to 15 hours per week


Job Description:

Experiential Education (EE) is hands-on learning, where students apply the concepts and theories studied in the classroom in the real world.  EE provides students with opportunities to collaborate with community partners, gain relevant work experience and develop professional skills through a range of work-integrated learning activities.

The Career Peer Educator is responsible for providing peer support by sharing information and promoting resources that assist in the development and attainment of students’ career goals. This position works with the LA&PS Career Education Coordinator to plan, facilitate and improve new and existing programming within the LA&PS Experiential Education Office at York University.


Major Areas of Responsibility:

 The Career Peer Educator will may be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Learn about resume writing standards, cover letter writing standards, interview standards, LinkedIn standards, networking standards, and workplace performance standards.
  • Provide peer support by identifying student needs and provide feedback on student documents.
  • Promote awareness of career education supports and assist students with obtaining information about available programs and services.
  • Share experiences, guidance and information through peer mentorship conversations and responding to questions and concerns.
  • Facilitate appointment sessions to provide targeted feedback to students on a one-on-one basis.
  • Facilitate Q&A sessions to disseminate information to groups of students.
  • Acts as an ambassador and role model by helping students navigate the LA&PS Internship Program job board.
  • Assist with planning and implementing program initiatives, activities, presentations, and various events.
  • Assist with collecting and documenting data and feedback on career education initiatives.
  • Assist with special projects, administrative duties, drafting reports, conducting research, and developing resources.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Currently completing a degree in the Liberal Arts or a Bachelor of Human Resource Management (other programs will also be considered) at York University.
  • 1 year of work experience in a workshop facilitator/peer leader role would be an asset.
  • Ability to provide instructions, communicate with others to explain and share information and support peers.
  • Ability to lead and motivate others towards learning new knowledge.
  • Ability to take initiative and demonstrate leadership skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with others to complete a shared goal.
  • Ability to provide insight and suggestions to support individuals in making informed decisions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Microsoft365, Adobe PDF and/or related PDF applications
