Study Abroad Awards & Funding

From supporting those with financial need, to celebrating academic achievement and community engagement, we are committed to recognizing the unique ways in which you contribute to university life.


Ahrens Scholarship

Value: 1 award, amount varies

Applicants must:

  • have at least a B+ average
  • have elected to travel to Germany/Austria under the year-abroad program.

Selection is made by the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, with preference given to a student majoring in German or German Studies.


International Study Abroad Award for Liberal Arts & Professional Studies

The LA&PS International Study Abroad Award provides additional support to LA&PS students approved for study abroad experiences. Registered students who demonstrate academic excellence where a financial barrier inhibits their participation in a study abroad experience are welcome to apply.

Eligibility

LA&PS degree-seeking students (domestic and international) must be currently enrolled in a Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies program, have a minimum GPA of 5.00, and be approved to study abroad in one of the following:

  • YU Exchanges with one of York University's official partner universities
  • York International Internship program
  • A YorkU Abroad course
  • An international study abroad experience in a LA&PS school/department course (attach confirmation from your professor)
  • Independent study abroad, either one or two courses or one term or a full year, with an internationally accredited institution approved with a Letter of Permission (submit copy of LOP form)
  • Practicum abroad (attach letter from practicum coordinator)
  • International conference presentation outside Canada (email of abstract acceptance required)

Requirement

"Give something back" by attending a study abroad session with LA&PS Dean's Office to share your experiences upon return.

The Joseph Webber Memorial Fund for International Education

Value: Multiple awards, variable amounts

The Joseph Webber Memorial Fund for International Education honours the memory of Joseph Webber in accordance with his conviction that international study plays an important role in student's academic and personal development. The bursary will be awarded annually to both graduate and undergraduates (in approximately equal numbers) who have been selected by York University to study at a university in (1) Germany, (2) Europe, or (3) another country as part of their York degree program.

Applicants must:

  • demonstrate financial need
  • be a Canadian citizen/landed immigrant and Ontario resident
  • submit a report on their experiences to York International upon their return

This award is not open to students at the Schulich School of Business.


German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service offers scholarships and study grants for highly qualified undergraduates and graduate students who wish to undertake a period of study in Germany. More information is available on the German Academic Exchange Service website.


Ontario-Baden-Württemberg Exchange Program (OBW)

Value: Variable amounts, depending on the length of study abroad.

OBW offers three very different kinds of opportunity for Ontario students to benefit from spending time at a partner university in Baden-Württemberg. More information is available on the OBW website.


OBW Summer Research Program, Germany

The Ontario/Baden-Württemberg Summer Research Program is a 2- to 4-month opportunity for Ontario graduate and undergraduate students in science, engineering, and health science disciplines. Participants will be engaged in research projects relevant to her/his studies at York; academic credit may be awarded at the discretion of each student's program. Each participant will be awarded a partial scholarship based on the total length of her/his experience.


OBW International Lake Constance Summer School, Germany

Value: $1000.00

The Ontario/Baden-Württemberg Student Exchange Program offers scholarships to students from Ontario universities who are selected by the OBW Program to participate in the Internationale Bodensee Hochschule (International Lake Constance Summer School). The IBH is a four-week summer program in which students from around the world study German and learn about the cultures of the German-speaking countries that surround Lake Constance: Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. Successful applicants will receive a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to help cover expenses during the course.


Universität Bonn – International Summer Course: German Language, Literature and Culture

One scholarship is available for a York student to participate in the Bonn International Summer Program in 2012. The scholarship will include the course fees and accommodation in a student dormitory. The student may need to pay a deposit of €30 for the dormitory room. Please note that travel expenses, insurance and living expenses (food, drinks, etc.) are not covered by the scholarship.
