After a brief review of the difficulties with traditional energy sources, the audience will be introduced to two new strategies still at the experimental stage: the use of photovoltaic cells to harvest sunlight and of fuel cells running on methanol to produce electricity on demand. Only an elementary view of the chemistry involved will be provided, with highlights of research progress at York and elsewhere
