Arts alumna Shelley Rabinovitch helps make York history

Alumna Dr. Shelley Rabinovitch (BA Hons. '77), a professor at the University of Ottawa, stopped by York's alumni office last Friday, Sept. 16 to collect the prize for winning the York University Remembered Alumni Contest.

Right: Dr. Rabinovitch

Rabinovitch, who appeared in the Maclean's Universities 2005 ranking as one the 20 most popular professors at the University of Ottawa, won the contest with her story about her time serving as an elected student body representative on the Board of Governors.

The contest was held as part of the lead-up activities to York's 50th anniversary celebrations in 2009. The entries were collected to help Professor Michiel Horn gather personal stories about the University's first 50 years, which will be published in his upcoming book.

Although the winner was chosen through a random draw, Rabinovitch’s story provides great insight in to the culture of Toronto in the 1970s.

"At the end of the academic year there was a lovely black-tie formal soireé [for the Board of Governors] held at one of the most exclusive clubs in Toronto. This was in the mid 1970s, and women standing toe to toe as equals to men was still a somewhat uncommon occurrence, particularly in the highest echelons of business. … I took great glee in walking around the glittering affair as one by one, the male BoG members went up to my escort and introduced themselves while ignoring me. Then my friend would shake each man's hand, saying, 'Hello, I am John Doe. I am Ms Rabinovitch's escort, and she is the Student Representative to the Board of Governors. May I introduce you to her?' (The men sputtered; I tried to keep a straight face.)" (Excerpt from the submission).

Since graduating from, Dr. Rabinovitch has earned an MA from Carleton Unversity, and a PhD from the University of Ottawa. She is the current instructor of the extremely popular "Magic, Witchcraft, and Occult Phenomenon" first-year course, and is co-author and senior editor of the "Encyclopedia of Modern Witchcraft and Neo-Paganism" (Citadel Press, 2002) with James R. Lewis.

The visit to the alumni office included a tour of the campus, and lunch at the Schulich dining room. Afterward, Dr. Rabinovitch was awarded a Kodak Easyshare Z740 5.0MP digital Camera.
