Event Ideas
Events are the lifeblood of any alumni group. Try to put on a wide variety of activities. Successful alumni events come in all types and sizes.
If yours is a new chapter, start out small. Plan a pub night or an alumni mixer so that members can get to know each other in an intimate environment and you don’t need to do a great deal of planning or take on financial risk.
Once you’ve decided on an event, submit your activity plan to the Alumni Office for support and funding consideration. We’ll also supply you with some event planning and reporting tools.
Here are some suggestions for your next event:
- Social
Pub nights, wine and cheese receptions, holiday parties, networking receptions
- Educational/cultural lectures
or seminars, professional development workshops, faculty presentations, financial planning sessions, theatre nights, museum tours
- Student outreach
mentorship programs, student recruitment activities, campus presentations, career centre programming
- Sports and athletic events
golf tournaments, “York Days” at pro sporting events, teams in community races, recreational teams (ultimate, volleyball, etc.), ski days
- Community Service
alumni ‘days’ with charitable groups like food banks, Habitat for Humanity, cause-related activities (Run for the Cure, Relay for Life, etc.)
- Family activities
picnic, barbecues, group outings to local attractions (Science Centre, Canada’s Wonderland, museums, etc.)
