DARE Project: AI in Economics
Program(s) of Study: Financial and Business Economics
Project Supervisor: Jinyue Li
The best part of DARE has been having the opportunity to dive deep into a topic I'm genuinely passionate about. It's rare to spend months exploring one idea, reading the latest research, testing different approaches, and building something alongside it. The experience has made me even more interested in the future of AI in economics, and I'm excited to keep developing the project.
Project Description:
My DARE research focuses on how AI can be integrated into economics education in a way that actually improves learning. I'm researching how AI is currently being used in economics, not just at York, but across universities and the profession more broadly. A big part of the project is understanding where AI adds value, where it falls short, and how it can be used responsibly in an academic setting. The project is still ongoing. So far, I've conducted a literature review, explored different approaches to AI in economics education, and worked on developing an AI-powered chatbot and dashboard that help students work through course concepts and assignments. Instead of giving students answers, the tools are designed to guide them through the learning process while encouraging them to verify information and think critically. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) - Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
