DARE Project: Dying in the Service of Empire: The Politics of Compassionate Gratuity in Colonial Nigeria’s Civil Service
Program(s) of Study: Law and Society / History
Project Supervisor: Damilola Adebayo
I hope that this work of historical scholarship will contribute to the field of African labour relations and that it will encourage scholars in history to pursue their own ambitions in their own fields.
Project Description:
My DARE research project entailed looking through a sample size of petitions for compassionate gratuity of workers who died in service of the colonial Nigerian government. Using a spreadsheet, I had to read through the documents and extract information that was considered important in helping to give a picture of the lives of the applicants, whose lives would continue to be managed by the state, even after death. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) - Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
