DARE Project: Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy: Community, Readers, and Publishing for the Future
Program(s) of Study: English & Professional Writing
Project Supervisor: Matthew Bucemi
My hope is that our research will help give a voice to both authors who haven't been platformed as much in Canadian literature as well as readers whose needs have not yet been met.
Project Description:
Our project built on the foundational idea for a new indie publishing press focused on sci-fi and fantasy and asked the tough questions required to bring that vision to life: Where will we get the money? Who should we partner with? In my research, I helped brainstorm, edit, and revise a grant application for the project, focusing on how to best express the mutual benefits of a future partnership between Toronto Public Library and the new press. I scouted authors and editors who are passionate about Canada’s sci-fi and fantasy scene and received helpful advice on current trends, the importance of book marketing, and where to find quality stories. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) - Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
