DARE Project: Data Analytic Applications in Environmental Studies
Program(s) of Study: Information Technology
Project Supervisor: Peter Khaiter
I hope my work is able to help lower the barriers to discovery in environmental studies and lead to positive impact in the local environment.
Project Description:
The Data Analytic Applications in Environmental Studies project aims to create a tool specialized for application in environmental studies. In collaboration with researchers from Phillip Island Nature Parks in southern Australia, we were able to create an interactive web map to help improve monitoring of the island's penguin population and find potential influence that the surrounding climate may have on local wildlife behaviour. The platform allows researchers to visualize, customize, and graph over fourty years worth of climate and penguin population data, improving automation and removing features unnecessary to the use case when compared to other solutions. The final web platform improves efficiency and ease of use for researchers, allowing more users to make discoveries in a shorter period of time. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) - Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
