Marcello Musto is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and is the founding director of the Laboratory for Alternative Theories at York University. His research lab explores critiques and alternatives to capitalism, with a global outlook that covers various subjects and political perspectives.
A SSHRC Insight Development Grant funded project, The Laboratory for Alternative Theories brings together research activities on capitalism and possible alternatives. The result is an eclectic, but focused and informative, set of scholarly interventions that appeals to a diverse international audience, and help us to better understand both the past and our contemporary world.
"We push the boundaries of accepted interpretations and existing literatures, connect different concepts and thinkers into new relationships, and inspire significant conversations for today" says Musto.
Globally recognized as a leading figure in Marx studies, Professor Musto's contributions over the last decade have been significant. His project, The Global History of Karl Marx’s Capital, which recently received the prestigious SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, reconstructs the complete history of Marx's Capital translation, dissemination, and reception in all the languages in which it was published.
His project Alternative Socio-Economic Ideas, 1789-1871, in which he re-examines non-capitalistic economic, social, and political systems across Europe post-French Revolution, also received a SSHRC Insight Development Grant.
