Passings: Professor William Westfall

A long-time member of Atkinson College and the Department of Humanities, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies since 1977, Professor William (Bill) Westfall passed away peacefully on August 18.

Bill was a passionate supporter of Canadian Studies at York and served for many years as the Coordinator of the Canadian Studies Program. The William Westfall Canadian Studies Prize was created to honour Professor Westfall’s commitment to the Program, and his ongoing contributions to our understanding of Canada. Following his retirement in 2012 as a Senior Scholar, he continued his active engagement with York, most recently teaching in the Graduate Program in History.

Bill won several awards for his books on the impact of Protestant clergy, institutions and beliefs on Ontario’s development. He was a beloved professor and an important social presence in the Toronto annex.

Bill will be missed by his colleagues, family and friends.
