Announcement: Appointment of Special Advisor on Indigenous Issues

Associate Professor Ruth Green has been appointed as Special Advisor to the Dean on Indigenous Issues, in the Faculty of LA&PS. Prof. Green’s term will begin July 1, 2022 and will continue until August 31, 2023.

Working within The Indigenous Framework for York University: A Guide to Action Prof. Green will advise the Dean’s Office on ways in which to address the impact and histories of systematic barriers experienced by Indigenous peoples in our community. This appointment is in alignment with York University’s Academic Plan, LA&PS’s Academic Plan, and the Principles on Indigenous Education developed by Universities Canada in 2015.

Prof. Green has had an outstanding career of teaching, research, and community engagement. She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role as Special Advisor since she has served as the co-chair of the Indigenous Council at York University and the Special Advisor to the President on Indigenous Initiatives.

As an activist and academic in Social Work, Prof. Green brings a fresh perspective as an urban Indigenous person and citizen of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. She is from the Mohawk Nation and is a member of the Turtle Clan. Dr. Green holds a PhD from OISE in Adult Education and Community Development, an MSW and a BSW from Toronto Metropolitan University.

As Special Advisor, Prof. Green will:  

  • Report to the Dean and provide guidance and input on questions related to the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students and faculty, with particular attention to helping the Faculty provide a welcoming and supportive environment for Indigenous peoples, practices, and knowledges;
  • Advise the Dean in the hiring of Indigenous faculty and the hiring and promotion of Indigenous staff;
  • Establish and Chair an Advisory Committee made up of students, faculty, and staff to identify priorities and develop recommendations to be conveyed to the Dean and Dean’s Office;
  • Liaise with the Associate Vice President Indigenous Initiatives.
