DARE Project: Indian Immigration and Migration in Canada: A Social Media Far-Right and Progressive Discourse Analysis on Instagram?
Program(s) of Study: Criminology
Project Supervisor: Ethel Tungohan
I hope this research draws attention to the growing wave of digital discrimination against Indian immigrants, especially in the context of rising far-right rhetoric.
Project Description:
My DARE project, titled "Indian Immigration and Migration in Canada: A Social Media Discourse Analysis on Instagram," explored how Indian immigrants, especially international students are portrayed on Instagram. I conducted a social media critical discourse analysis to examine the broader ideological and thematic narratives embedded in Instagram posts and comment sections related to Indian immigration in Canada. This was done using targeted hashtags to track how different ideological groups (e.g., far-right and progressive) framed Indian immigration. I systematically gathered and categorized content to identify key themes like racism, misinformation, and political polarization, etc offering insight into how these narratives spread among younger audiences online. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) - Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
