DARE Project: Expanding the Discourse Around Dying Through Photovoice
Program(s) of Study: Social Work
Project Supervisor: Maxxine Rattner
I hope this research contributes to a more ethically grounded and person-centered approach in palliative and end-of-life research.
Project Description:
My DARE research project focused on the ethical considerations involved in using photovoice as a research methodology with individuals who are nearing the end of life. Photovoice is a participatory method that uses photography to center the perspectives and lived experiences of research participants. Under the guidance of Professor Maxxine, I conducted a scoping review of existing literature at the intersection of palliative care and photovoice. My goal was to identify gaps in current ethical guidance and examine how researchers have navigated consent, vulnerability, agency, and representation when working with this population. I reviewed journal articles, synthesized findings, and helped draft a research plan that can guide future inquiry in this field. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) - Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
