DARE Project: The Differential Impact of Culture on the resilience, resistance and accommodation of refugee youth to Canadian Society
Project Supervisor: Livy Visano

Project Description:

This project examines the levels of adjustments to Canadian society by refugee youths. it is hypothesized that youths construct a hybrid culture consisting of elements of the host (Canadian) and home (Middle Eastern) cultures in order for them to socially construct their identities in navigating various institutions (schools, leisure. peer relations, family, laws, social media). This project explores the push-pull dimensions of youth in negotiating the challenges of both traditional and western values. How has the refugee experience facilitated and/ exacerbated processes of adjustments? To what extent do youths resist these challenges? What are their respective levels of resilience? What roles are played by a host of institutions in mediating the impact of prevailing cultures on their identities? The project will include a cross sectional sample of youths from various countries of the Middle East now living in different Canadian cities.
