DARE Project: Testing a New Theoretical Approach to Sexual Assault and Consent – Phase II
Program(s) of Study: Psychology & Criminology
Project Supervisor: Tuulia Law

I hope that this research will allow people to understand the nuances of their sexual experiences more deeply.

Project Description:

The project aimed to move beyond dichotomous understandings of consent vs non-consent to analyze the complexities of ambiguous and grey areas. This new theoretical approach to sexual experiences focuses on experiences that fall between rewarding and unrewarding/harmful, and willing and unwilling social/sexual interactions. During the course of the project, I wrote a literature review and created an annotated bibliography. We analyzed and coded the data that was collected from student and sex worker groups during the first phase of the project. The second phase of the project focuses on dissemination of the data as well as the new theoretical approach. We will also be presenting the findings at an academic conference in August.

The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) - Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members. Find out more about DARE.
