Job Description:

New Beat is the New College community monthly newsletter.  It is produced by students for students. New Beat is a joint venture between New College’s Student Council and Office of the College Head. The student-centered lifestyle articles will educate and entertain, with a focus on student life and engagement, personal and professional development, geared to the business students in the New College community. 

The Editor works in cooperation with the New College Student Council, student clubs, Peer Mentors and the Office of the Head. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Produce monthly issues of the New Beat newsletter for distribution on the first of each month. 
  • Recruit contributions from volunteer writers/photographers, cover events and conduct interviews within the New College community. 
  • Write stories/articles for the newsletter that promote student engagement and student life with a special focus on clubs and on alumni. 
  • Layout and format newsletter content for each monthly issue. 
  • Take photographs as needed. 
  • Attend New College Council events and meetings to collect materials/content for New Beat and to discuss New Beat matters as appropriate. 
  • Attend New College Community Partners meetings to give report of New Beat status and request support as appropriate. 
  • Assist with soliciting sponsors as necessary. 
  • May be asked to assist with creating or editing various community videos. 

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate full-time York University student. 
  • Experience writing articles and newsletter layout. 
  • Experience in video making/editing is an asset.

  • High proficiency using Microsoft Word, Publisher and/or PowerPoint

  • Students who are a good fit for this position are approachable, knowledgeable and open to learning about themselves and others. They will show high levels of Emotional Intelligence combined with excellent adaptability and organizational skills.
