Job Description:

The Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) program serves all York students by facilitating study sessions in first- and second-year courses. Under the direction of the Student Success Coordinator and the Manager of Student Success and Access Programs, the PASS Leader facilitates the understanding of historically difficult first- and second-year course material to undergraduate students in structured, pre-planned study sessions to engage students in learning efficient study skills while in a group setting, to facilitate academic support to all students at York University.   

Planning involves attending lectures, reviewing relevant course material, and selecting activities to help the PASS attendees during a weekly two-hour PASS session. PASS Leaders help students structure and prioritize their study routine and facilitate collaborative learning through group activities as they review the course material. They are trained to facilitate student learning by modelling good study habits and encouraging students to learn from each other.    

As part of your experience, you will participate in Becoming YU, a program designed to support students in: 

  • Creating meaningful goals and objectives 
  • Recognizing the value of their personal, academic and professional experiences 
  • Identifying their competencies and skills  
  • Articulating their skills and experiences with confidence 

Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your student employment supervisor/coach for reflecting on your progress and getting valuable feedback.  

Specific Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Attend all course lectures by the course director/instructor for the assigned course section  
  • Plan and prepare for each PASS and review session; this includes but is not limited to reading the required texts, doing the required homework, planning and developing worksheets for the sessions, filling out the planning sheet for each session, curating mock tests and exams, etc.  
  • Hold one PASS session a week 
  • Leaders must be regular and on time, and remain in the room for the entire scheduled session, even if no one attends the session 
  • Keep the Student Success Coordinator informed of any changes to PASS sessions or review sessions  
  • Keep records of PASS session attendance and feedback, and report any progress on a PASS shared drive 
  • Attend regularly scheduled PASS team meetings 
  • Observe at least one other PASS Leader’s session during the term 
  • Promote PASS sessions (i.e. classroom visits, social media) 
  • Meet regularly with the professor to share your handouts and establish positive working rapport 
  • Participate in York Orientation Day as needed 
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Student Success Coordinator 

 

Hiring for one (1) ECON and one (1) ADMS Senior PASS Leader.

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate York student with a minimum B+ grade in the assigned course 
  • High overall academic standing 
  • Experience and familiarity with York University and campus resources
  • Previous relevant experience with peer tutoring, mentoring or other peer support at a post-secondary, preferably university level 
  • Previous experience with peer mentorship is an asset

  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team 
  • Knowledge and/or sensitivity to issues affecting domestic and international students and their transition to Canada or to York University 
  • Knowledge of York’s resources and services for students and campus life 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including tact ad diplomacy
  • Demonstrates reliability punctuality, and enthusiasm to support students with their study skills
  • Students who are a good fit for this role are approachable, knowledgeable, and open learning about themselves and others. They will show high levels of emotional intelligence combined with excellent adaptability and organizational skills
