Job Description:

The Special Projects Peer is an upper year level undergraduate student with good academic standing, who will work with Student Engagement Coordinators and other LA&PS staff to support initiatives such as the LA&PS Peer Mentor Program, New Student Enrollment, Orientation and other specialized programming for the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies.  

The Special Projects Peer will work alongside the Student Engagement Coordinators to support the Peer Mentor Program and its affiliated members, the Peer Mentor Community of Practise (PMCOP) committee and any additional projects, as needed. The Special Projects Peer will provide administrative support and contribute to the planning and execution of various initiatives and events including training, assessment and the maintenance of various records and documents in relation to the Peer Mentor Program.  

The candidate will also be part of the Student Leadership Team.

  • Articulating their skills and experiences with confidence.  

Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your supervisor/coach to reflect on your progress and get valuable feedback. 

 

Responsibilities  

  • The Special Projects Peer will support the weekly Peer Mentor Community of Practice committee (PMCOP) as a student leader. Duties include attending regular meetings with supervisors prepare for weekly PMCOP meetings, discussing the status and next steps of on-going Peer Mentor related projects and brainstorm ideas. 
  • The Special Projects Peer is responsible to create meeting agendas, take minutes and upload records and documents into appropriate shared folders (MS Teams). 
  • Provides facilitation and support to PMCOP, as well as other meetings and events associated with the LA&PS Peer Mentor Network, including administrative and logistical support for online and in-person activities. 
  • Contributes to fostering a community of inclusivity, collaboration and elevating the student voice among affiliation peer leader groups: Peer Mentor Network, LA&PS International Peers, LA&PS Colleges, Student Councils Student Success and other related groups or areas.   
  • The Special Projects Peer will also assist in developing and implementing evaluation and tracking tools in conjunction with the Student Engagement Coordinators to measure the impact of the LA&PS Peer Mentor Program.  
  • Works with Student Engagement Coordinators to develop content and presentation materials for various training events, such as Peer Mentor training for work-study students and volunteers. Contributes to the logistical planning and coordination of training events within appropriate timelines. 
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of assessment activities, such as meeting facilitation, note-taking, as well as preparing and reviewing surveys and forms.
  • Works with LA&PS partners to assist in the delivery of new student preparation workshops throughout the summer for incoming students (i.e. New Student Enrollment Workshops, Get Ready of Class, etc.) 
  • May be asked to work alongside the LA&PS Colleges and Student Engagement Team to assist with the planning, creation and delivery of Fall and Winter Orientation events.  
  • Updating various documents and records and maintaining the organization of shared documents in the appropriate locations. (MS Teams). 
  • Regularly monitors the lapscol@yorku.ca email account and responds to emails professionally and accurately within a timely manner.  
  • Attends required training and professional development sessions, as required. Attends regular meetings with Student Engagement Coordinators or supervisors, responds to emails and messages on MS Teams within a timely manner.  
  • Complete other duties as assigned 

Qualifications:

  • Current upper year undergraduate York student (we encourage applicants from diverse programs of study although due to the nature of the position, students from programs affiliated with LA&PS are preferred) 
  • GPA of 7.0+ 
  • Experience and familiarity with LA&PS and York (Keele) campus student support services 
  • Previous experience in in peer mentorship an asset 
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written): academic writing, public speaking and presentation proficiency 
  • Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds/cultures

  • Experience with project management tools such as MS Teams, Slack, etc.
