Events & Outreach Fund

Th Global & Community Engagement (GCE) Events & Outreach Fund is intended to support events and outreach initiatives that build inclusiveness, open opportunities for community dialogue, and diversify community engagement at York and within the local and international community. Faculty members and registered York students and/or organizations are invited to submit applications.

As our University Academic Plan recognizes, a “spirit of inclusion and empowerment” is a priority for enhancing community engagement within and beyond the university. Commitments to social justice, equity, and inclusion form the core principles of successful Global & Community Engagement collaborative projects. Successful projects will foster Principle #2 of the LA&PS Academic Plan, “Enhance connections and collaborations,” by collaborating on initiatives to engage local communities. Applications must be made in advance of the event/outreach activity.

Eligibility

Open to full-time YUFA faculty in Research and Teaching streams, Retired YUFA, and Contract faculty members (CUPE Unit 2, CLA). Current LA&PS students and registered York student groups are also encouraged to apply.

GCE Fund applicants may not submit the same proposal for the same project to more than one LA&PS Internal Grant, i.e., Internal Grants managed by other units within the Office of the Dean, LA&PS, such as the Research Office, Teaching & Learning, Faculty Council, etc.

Under the theme “York in the Community / The Community at York,” preference will be given to events that focus on community engagement held at the York campus, or in local/international community spaces where the applicant has developed a robust partnership.

Application Deadline

Applications are closed. Stay tuned for the next call in Fall 2026.

Value and Duration

Applicants may request up to $1,000 per event and one grant two years from the date of an applicant’s last successful GCE submission.

LubunTO is a newly incorporated grassroots organization led by and for queer newcomers. We provide support and system navigation services to address the settlement needs of refugees, international students, and other immigrants from Turkey and West Asian regions living in Toronto. As the first and only organization in the city offering services in both Kurdish and Turkish, LubunTOserves a uniquely underserved community. Our diverse membership includes many marginalized communities such as queer youth, precarious workers, people living with HIV, and queer migrants living in poverty and people living with disabilities. Additionally, as part of the diaspora, we advocate for queer liberation and freedom for all in our homelands.

On May 5, 2025 the Department of Communication and Media Studies held its annual Faculty Retreat, which featured a 4-hour Decolonizing the Curriculum workshop.

The session aimed to develop and sustain critical approaches to engaging with Indigenous communities, histories and perspectives in our teaching, research and service. This workshop was developed and facilitated by Prof. Brian Wright-McLeod, a Dakota/Anishinaabe academic, author, critic and community member in the department. It was organized by the department’s Decolonization Committee.
