PRWR 2005 3.0 - Writing in Digital Cultures

Writing in Digital Cultures: Study Abroad Edition offers students a unique opportunity to explore digital writing, rhetoric, and cultural production through a two-week immersive experience at Durham University in England alongside peers from California State University, Los Angeles, and Durham University. Through collaborative workshops, multimedia storytelling projects, and publication opportunities, students will develop advanced digital writing skills while gaining valuable international experience. By engaging with Durham's rich historical and cultural environment, including medieval libraries, Durham Cathedral, and Roman heritage sites, students will connect the history of writing and communication with contemporary digital practices while developing cross-cultural communication, digital literacy, and global perspectives highly valued in today's professional landscape.

Students join international peers at Durham University in an intensive workshop exploring digital writing, rhetoric, and cultural production. Before departure to the UK, students compose a digital multimedia text—such as an electronic soundscape, an audio/podcast piece, or a digital video—that blends public domain UK historical media with contemporary North American digital conventions. Daily writing workshops combined with cultural excursions create an immersive learning experience that connects historical writing technologies to contemporary digital rhetoric.
