LA&PS Spotlights

The Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies

The Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies

York is home to more than 25 organized research units (ORUs). These ORUs provide a home for research development beyond the traditional academic setting. The Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies is an ORUs with a mandate to encourage, publicize, celebrate and enhance the wide range of excellent Canadianist scholarship at York University in interdisciplinary, collaborative and critical ways. “The Centre is a focal point for Canadian oriented research at York” explained Jean Michel Montsion, Director of Robarts Centre, “as such it supports a number of research clusters and projects, as well as talks, symposia and seminars that help broaden the reach and scope of the field of Canadian Studies as well as extend the reputation of York’s expertise more broadly.”

This spotlight highlights two initiatives by Robarts Centre. The first is The Robarts Connects Series which aims at connecting York graduate students with each other, connecting their studies with their future, and connecting their research with unavoidable research challenges in the contemporary Canadian landscape. Two upcoming events of the connects series on Zoom are:

  • Planning next steps: Insights from postdoctoral fellows – 28 October from 1pm to 2:30pm. Register: robarts@yorku.ca
  • “Researching diversity, equity and representation: A roundtable to share research experiences, struggles and solutions” – 12 November from 11am to noon. Register: robarts@yorku.ca

In addition, as we continue our series highlighting emerging scholars, we feature three postdoctoral fellows affiliated with the Robarts Centre. In the September 20th issue, we spotlighted Julia Polyck-O’Neill, and in this issue we spotlight Kate Reid (below). Enjoy the read and feel free to Connect with the Robarts Centre via its website, YouTube channel, on Twitter and Facebook.

Early Career Scholars: Kate Reid

Kate Reid is a Postdoctoral Fellow on a MITACS/SSHRC-funded project, “Connecting Culture and Childhood: Using Musical Arts Programming to Promote Belonging for Young Newcomers in the GTA” or  CCCP. The project is in collaboration with Andrea Emberly, Associate Professor in the Children, Childhood, and Youth program at York.

CCCP is a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary, and multigenerational partnership with community partners such as Toronto Public Libraries and a children’s choir for newcomers and refugees in the GTA. Together, they have been finalizing a children’s storybook called “Zahra and the Lost Voices” and an accompanying song called “Music is For Everyone to Share”. CCCP responds to the endangerment of musical cultures around the world while documenting how arts-based programming models impact refugee children’s social integration and well-being from a child-centered perspective.

“One of the main goals of our work is to provide community support, mentoring, and professional skills to newcomer and refugee children to express themselves creatively through music, songwriting, and storytelling,” explained Dr. Reid. “We hope that our findings will inform community programming for young newcomers and refugees that builds on their creative capacity, underscores their contributions to Canadian culture, and supports their wellbeing as they resettle in various communities across Canada.”

With support from professional musicians, sound engineers, and music producers, Reid uses collaborative ethnographic songwriting, a research creation method they developed, to co-compose and record songs with individual children from the choir. These child-led creative outputs will be added to a developing archive of songs composed and recorded by newcomer and refugee children. Learn more about the project by connecting with Kate Reid.
