LA&PS Spotlights
York professor awarded prestigious 3-M National Teaching Fellowship
Andrea Davis, associate professor of humanities in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) and special advisor on LA&PS' Anti-Black Racism Strategy, is one of the 10 winners of a 2021 3M National Teaching Fellowship. Davis received the award in recognition of her transformational work as an educator and academic.
Pandemic Relief Program for faculty and instructors opens the door to global learning
- Deadline to submit a request for the SU, S1, and S2 terms is Friday, July 16, 2021, at 4:30 pm.
Earlier this year, the Provost’s Office announced new support for faculty members and contract course directors struggling with added pressures resulting from the pandemic in the Winter 2021 term. Funds from the Guest Lecturer Support Program were used to offer honoraria for visiting experts who shared new insights in classrooms as course directors were given a break. The program returns this summer.
2021 Killam Prizes
- Value: $100,000 (one prize is awarded each year in each of the five disciplines)
- Deadline: June 30, 2021.
The Killam Prizes honour active, distinguished Canadian scholars who have been engaged in research in universities, hospitals, research or scientific institutes, or other similar institutions and are making a significant impact in their respective fields in the following disciplines: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering

Pre-announcement notice: Black Scholars Research Fund - Round 2
The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) has established the LA&PS Black Scholars Research Fund (BSRF), max. $5,000, to support innovative research project ideas from qualified eligible applicants who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent. Projects may be standalone or part of a broader research program. the faculty will launch a second round of a call for proposal from eligible applicants at the assistant or associate professor level. Resource: SSHRC Partnership Development Grant (PDG) Information Session

The Dean’s Office cordially invites you to LA&PS’ annual Information Session on SSHRC Partnership Development Grants (PDG). PDGs (maximum $200,000, duration 1-3 years, deadline November 15) provide support to teams/partnerships, led by a project director, to develop research and/or related activities in the social sciences and humanities, including knowledge mobilization and the meaningful involvement of students and emerging scholars.
The session will feature an overview of the programs, guidance on strategies for developing competitive proposals, and include a panel discussion with Faculty Members who have participated in successful PDG applications. In addition, the session will outline additional resources that the Dean’s Office has developed to facilitate applications for these opportunities. External Notices
Update on the Aid to Scholarly Journals Funding Opportunity
- Deadline: September 10, 2021.
SSHRC has communicated that the Aid to Scholarly Journals competition is proceeding as planned. The submission deadline is September 10, 2021. Overall, this funding opportunity remains the same as in the last competition; however, there are some points journals should note when preparing their applications. The eligibility criteria, including open access eligibility criteria, are the same. Please note, however, that the transition period allowed during the last competition has concluded and will no longer be offered. The value of the grant, the duration of the grant and the grant selection process have not changed. In addition, SSHRC is cognizant of the potential impacts of COVID-19 on scholarly journals. Flexibility measures within the application are under development.
The Aid to Scholarly Journals website will be updated on June 25, 2021.

Environment and Climate Change Canada
Climate Action and Awareness Fund
- Value and Duration: This request for proposals will provide up to $6 million per project over a maximum of five years.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Climate Action and Awareness Fund (CAAF) has announced a call for proposals for Advancing Climate Change Science and Technology Research. The call will fund up to $59M for projects that will strengthen Canada’s science capacity to understand, identify, accelerate, and evaluate actions towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Lead applicants are encouraged to develop collaborative proposals and partner with other academic institutions and organizations, including federal, provincial, territorial, or municipal government partners. Applicants are strongly encouraged to register for the CAAF webinar, held on Thursday, April 22, from 1-2 pm.
Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) - Summer 2022
- Deadline: Submit projects by June 9, 2021, at 1 p.m. PST.
Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) is now accepting faculty project submissions for Summer 2022. GRI pairs faculty in Canada with international undergrads for 12-week research projects from May to October.

Trans-Atlantic Platform Recovery, Renewal and Resilience in a Post-Pandemic World (RRR) Call for Proposals
Value:
- Canadian applicants can request up to a maximum of $200,000 per proposal
- Quebec applicants eligible to apply for SSHRC funding may also apply for a supplement from the FRQSC: $50, 000$ to $75,000$ (+ Indirect cost of research depending on funds available)

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has announced that it is participating in the third joint research call on Recovery, Renewal and Resilience in a Post-Pandemic World (RRR) launched by the Trans-Atlantic Platform (T-AP). SSHRC is collaborating with key humanities and social science funders in Europe and the Americas to support international research projects that can contribute to increasing our understanding of societal transformations and the role of social innovation.
NSERC Alliance-Mitacs Accelerate Grants

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in partnership with Mitacs are pleased to announce a new joint initiative that will support the R&D efforts of Canadian university researchers and their partners while supporting highly qualified personnel including students and/or postdoctoral fellows. The new opportunity is being offered through NSERC’s Alliance grants and Mitac’s Accelerate programs.
SSHRC Joint Initiative for Digital Citizen Research – Connection Grants

- Events - $7,000 to $25,000
- Outreach Activities - $7,000 to $50,000; higher amounts may be considered if well justified - Duration:1 year

SSHRC announced the relaunching of the Connection Grants arm of the Initiative for Digital Citizen Research (IDCR), a joint initiative with the Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH). The IDCR aims to develop a better understanding of the impacts of online disinformation in Canada in order to better inform programs and policies, build Canada’s capacity to conduct research on – and related to – countering online disinformation and other related online harms, and help foster a community of researchers engaged with digital citizenship and online disinformation in Canada. It also aims to provide assistance to selected events and outreach activities for short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives.

SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants (PEG)

These grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. The small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through Partnership Engage Grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. NSERC - Alliance Grants: Option 2
- Value: over $30,000 to $100,000 per year
- Duration: 1 to 5 years

NSERC has released details about a new Alliance Option 2 two-pager that provides an overview of what the NSERC Alliance Option 2 funding is all about. The projects should aim to address and are driven by an unmet societal need, meaning that the results matter not just to the partner organizations but also to the public. Refer to the NSERC resources page to access the best practices webinar, a summary of NSERC requirements and more. The results should be broadly shared in various formats, allowing even non-specialists outside the project to understand and use the results. CIHR Funding Opportunities
A list of funding opportunities through CIHR can be found on this page of the agency’s website. Please be attentive to any COVID-19 update that appears as part of the posting for specific opportunities. Due to the large volume of RFAs, the Office of Research Services has created a simplified Excel spreadsheet that will make it easier for researchers to locate the funding call that is most appropriate to their research area. You will be required to enter your Passport York user ID and password for YU Link to gain access to the spreadsheet. Alternatively, you may contact ORS at research@yorku.ca to send you the file as an attachment.
