The Tom Janes Award for Black Scholars will be awarded to domestic or international Black students who are enrolled their first year in an undergraduate program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University. Double-major students and major/minor students must be taking at least one major in LA&PS. To be eligible, candidates must be full-time students (min. 18 credits in each fall/winter semester), remain in good academic standing (minimum sessional GPA 4.0) and demonstrate financial need. The award will be renewable for up to three (3) additional years as long as recipients remain full-time students and maintain the minimum GPA. Applicants for this award are required to complete the Student Profile and a Needs Assessment in the Financial Aid, Awards and Scholarships (FAAS) platform by the end of fall reading week. Shortlisted students will be asked to provide a personal statement explaining their qualifications for the award, and one letter of support from a professor, guidance counsellor or other high school teacher. The support letter should indicate the student's performance in the later years of high school, and make special note of any improvements in the student's academic performance over time.
