Faculty of Graduate Studies launches Academic Excellence Fund

The Academic Excellence Fund’s primary goal is to support graduate students in advancing their research and scholarly objectives by providing them with easier access to funding for hands-on learning activities like conferences, publications and fieldwork research. Eligible students may request up to $2000 for expenses directly related to their own research and scholarship activities, as well as $300 for collective initiatives per academic year.

SSHRC Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative

SSHRC has officially launched a new Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative (RGD) as a result of the Federal Budget 2021 announcement. This Initiative aims to support partnership research to inform actions that address social disparities related to race, gender and other forms of diversity. With new funds outlined in Federal Budget 2021, SSHRC will soon launch the Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative. This strategic initiative will enhance society’s understanding of the causes and persistence of systemic racism and discrimination, and the impact of oppression on Canadians and our communities, and will help develop strategies to support greater justice and equity. Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board - 2022 Grants Program

The Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is accepting research proposals for its 2022 Grants Program with the objectives to:

• enhance workers’ compensation system outcomes by supporting innovative proposals that are aligned with the WSIB’s strategic mandate
• help strengthen Ontario’s workers’ compensation system and deliver on our priority of making Ontario a safer place to work

The central areas of focus for the 2022 WSIB Grants Program is on research that can help make Ontario the safest place to work.  Three considerations for the competition include: How we work; How we approach health and safety; How we support return-to-work and recovery.

2022 Call for Applications to the CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Program

• Value: $100, 000 CDN in unrestricted research support
• Duration: 2-year term - The term will begin on April 1, 2022 and end on March 31, 2024.

The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) recently announced the 2022 Call for Applications to the CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Program.  A summary is provided below. This program provides funding and support to help early career researchers build networks and develop essential skills to become the next generation of research leaders.  Scholars’ research interests must be aligned with the themes of an eligible CIFAR research program.  Early-career research leaders who engage with any of the following CIFAR research programs are invited to apply.

2023 CFI Innovation Fund Competition

Please find below the memo and documents from VPRI regarding the 2023 CFI Innovation Fund. The Innovation Fund supports promising and innovative research or technology development in areas where Canada currently is or has the potential to be, competitive on the global stage.

The Innovation Fund does this by providing up to 40% of large-scale infrastructure costs (total project costs must exceed $1 million). Another 40% is typically matched through the Ontario Research Fund Large Infrastructure Fund, while vendor and/or institutional contributions make up the remaining 20%. Research infrastructure expenditures and in-kind contributions on or after November 1, 2020, are eligible for this competition.

iNOI submissions must include a Dean’s Memo. Therefore, if you are planning a submission to the internal competition, please contact Associate Dean Ravi de Costa (adres@yorku.ca) as soon as possible to discuss your project and request support for proposal development from the LA&PS Research Office.

There is a mandatory internal NOI (iNOI) deadline of October 15. In advance of the October 15 iNOI deadline, potential applicant teams can also meet with Maheen Hasan of VPRI-SIRI (mhasan@yorku.ca) with requests for information sessions to go over program requirements and budget building.

Special Call: New Frontiers in Research Fund - 2021 Innovative Approaches to Research in the Pandemic Context

The New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) recently launched the 2021 Innovative Approaches to Research in the Pandemic Context competition, a special call to explore new, innovative directions in research methodologies.  The Convergence Portal is now open for submission of a Notification of Intent to Apply (NOIs). The objectives are:

• To accelerate the exploration of new approaches and the development and testing of new directions in research methodologies, to respond to challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
• To support new ways of conducting community and field-based research, since the pandemic has had the greatest impact on researchers’ ability to collect data and conduct this type of research

2022 NFRF Transformation Competition

• Value and Duration: $1.6M - $3.2M per year for direct costs (plus additional funding for indirect costs of up to 25%) for up to 6 years.

The NFRF Transformation steam competition is designed to support large-scale, Canadian- led interdisciplinary research projects that address a major challenge with the potential to realize real and lasting change (high reward). The challenge may be fundamental, leading to a scientific breakthrough, or applied, with a social, economic, environmental or health impact. Projects are expected to be world-leading, drawing on global research expertise where relevant. The nominated principal investigator (NPI) of the team must email Mark Roseman at roseman@yorku.ca as soon as possible, and not later than September 17. Mitacs and Scotiabank - Scotiabank Economic Resilience Research Fund

Mitacs and Scotiabank are accepting applications to the Scotiabank Economic Resilience Research Fund (SERRF) to advance economic resilience in communities across Canada.

Open Research Area for the social sciences

• Deadline: Wednesday, 17 November 2021, 16:00 (Central European Time).

The partners of the Open Research Area (ORA) are pleased to announce that the seventh ORA joint funding opportunity is now open. This pre-call announcement is being issued to allow interested researchers to begin discussions with potential research partners ahead of the formal launch of the funding opportunity.

The ORA was created to strengthen international cooperation in social sciences by funding high-quality scientific research projects. SSHRC will support the participation of Canadian researchers from all disciplines of the social sciences and humanities.

A webinar will be held on September 22, 2021 to provide information and guidance from the funders on the requirements of the Call as well as an opportunity for questions and answers. To allow for the different time zones, two identical webinars at 13:00 CET (7:00 ET) and 20:00 CET (14:00 ET), which will each last approximately one hour. The link to the webinar is forthcoming. Association of Commonwealth Universities - Gender Grants

This opportunity funds research projects that support the disciplinary field of Research Development. Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative

Following the release of the tri-agency research data management policy in March 2021, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is pleased to announce the extension of the Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative. This initiative aims to continue helping the Canadian social sciences and humanities research community better understand data management, and incorporate data management considerations into research practices.

The initiative will fund at least 10 meritorious Connection Grants proposals per competition for the November 2021, February, May and August 2022 cycles, to support the research community’s development, adoption and dissemination of research data management standards, practices, tools and skills appropriate to their field.

Call for Nominations - Bank of Canada’s 2022 Fellowship Program

• Value and Duration:
  • The Fellowship Award provides annual funding of up to $90,000 to leading academic researchers for a term of up to five years.
  • The Governor’s Award provides annual funding of $30,000 for distinguished emerging researchers for a term of up to two years
• Agency Deadline: November 30, 2021

The Program recognizes academics who are making exemplary contributions to economic and financial research in Canada. The Bank of Canada makes two financial awards available each year to encourage and foster excellence in research that relates to the Bank’s core functions of monetary policy, the financial system, currency and funds management. Potential research topics should align with the Bank’s current research priorities.

The Bank of Canada Fellowship program aims to promote collaboration and partnerships between Bank researchers and leading academics at Canadian post-secondary institutions. It also contributes to the education and development of Canada’s researchers in fields related to the Bank’s core functions. Royal Society of Canada Nomination Process

Please see below two memos regarding the Royal Society of Canada, 2022 institutional nominations for Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC) and the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists (the College).

For all working on RSC nominations, the new guidelines for this year’s RSC competition were released this week.

Please note that interested applicants are not required to submit nominations using the institutional process. In addition to the institutional process, interested applicants may be nominated directly by existing Fellows of the Royal Society. Fellow-led Nominations are fully supported by Faculty-based Research Office staff. As external letters of reference are required, interested applicants are encouraged to begin the preparation of files in advance of the expected launch date of the 2022 competition in September (deadline December 1, 2022).

Canada Council for the Arts - 2022 Molson Prize Competition

• Value: $50,000.
• Deadline October 1, 2021 (new deadline)

The Canada Council for the Arts is now accepting nominations for the 2022 Molson Prize competition. A summary is provided below, and application materials are available on the Council’s website. Molson Prizes are awarded annually to distinguished individuals to encourage continuing contributions to the cultural and intellectual heritage of Canada.  Two prizes are awarded each year, one in the arts and one in the social sciences and humanities.

Candidates must be nominated for the award. To be nominated, candidates must have made a substantial and distinguished contribution over a significant period and still be active and productive in their careers. They must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, as defined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. They do not need to be residing in Canada.

Guggenheim Fellowships

The John Simon Guggenheim Foundation will soon be accepting nominations for the Guggenheim Fellowships. The Fellowships are open to any field. The application form will soon be available on the Guggenheim Fellowship website. Guggenheim Fellowships are grants to selected individuals made for a minimum of six months and a maximum of twelve months. The purpose of the Guggenheim Fellowship program is to help provide Fellows with blocks of time in which they can work with as much creative freedom as possible. Fulbright Grants in the US for Canadian Faculty Members- Competition Open

Fulbright Canada recently announced a Call for Applications for its Canadian Scholar Awards 2022-2023 Program. This program strengthens binational collaborative research and promotes thoughtful public debate on topics that reflect the broad range of contemporary issues relevant to Canada, the United States, and the relationship between the two countries. There are two streams:

• Fulbright Canada Research Chairs Program The award ranges from US $25,000 to US$50,000 for 4 – 9 months.
• Traditional Fulbright Scholar Award The award is US $12,500 for one semester (4 months)

Health Research Foundation: Fellowship in Health Systems Resilience

The Health Research Foundation (HRF) of Innovative Medicines Canada recently announced a Call for Applications (CFA) for its Fellowship Program in Health Systems Resilience. Areas of focus with the health system could include long-term care, public health agencies of the provinces, regulation and regulators, organizational development of health systems, accountability, the role of management and the role of science, and international comparative work, among others.

Mitacs Business Strategy Internship Program

  • $10K; the partner pays $5K and no university funds are required $15K; the partner pays only $7.5K and no university funds are required.
  • At $15K, participants have the option of using up to $5K for specified project costs or to top up the intern stipend.

Mitacs is accepting applications to its new Business Strategy Internship Program. This program allows students to apply their technical expertise to business challenges to support an organization’s innovative activities. A summary is provided below. The main objective is to enable the brightest students to undertake a collaborative internship with businesses or eligible not-for-profit organizations (NFPs). The award is open to students across all disciplines, from law to STEM to social sciences and humanities. Mitacs Accelerate SME Discount

Mitacs has just launched a special SME discount call for the Accelerate program. Faculty members that are collaborating with a company/Not for Profit (NFP) that has fewer than 500 employees, can get a discounted rate for the company contribution. The main points of the program are:

1. The contribution is $3,750+HST from the partner + $11,250 from Mitacs (instead of the standard $7,500+HST from partner and $7,500 from Mitacs) for a 4-6 month internship unit.
2. Submission deadline is February 1st, 2022, or while quantities last.
3. 1 discounted unit per named intern
4. Partner has to be 1-499 employees, including NFPs

SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants (PEG) provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. The small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through Partnership Engage Grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. NSERC has released details about a new Alliance Option 2 two-pager that provides an overview of what the NSERC - Alliance Grants option 2 funding is all about. The projects should aim to address and are driven by an unmet societal need, meaning that the results matter not just to the partner organizations but also to the public. Refer to the NSERC resources page to access the best practices webinar, a summary of NSERC requirements and more. The results should be broadly shared in various formats, allowing even non-specialists outside the project to understand and use the results.
