Indigenous Peoples and COVID-19 Rapid Research Funding Opportunity

• Value: The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $6M.
  • The maximum amount per grant for Research Operating Grants is $250,000 for one year.
  • The maximum amount per grant for Knowledge Mobilization Grants is $150,000 for one year.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is pleased to announce the launch of the Indigenous Peoples and COVID-19 Rapid Research Funding Opportunity. This initiative is being led by the CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (IIPH), in partnership with the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH), the Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR), the Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH), and the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR). This funding opportunity will provide funding for research and knowledge mobilization for Indigenous communities (i.e., First Nations, Inuit, Métis and/or Urban Indigenous communities), Indigenous organizations and researchers who identify as Indigenous (or researchers who provide evidence of having meaningful and culturally safe involvement with Indigenous Peoples) in Canada who are responding to the unique health and well-being needs of Indigenous Peoples as they relate to the COVID-19 pandemic. Potential applicants who wish to submit an application as the Nominated Principal Applicants should contact CIHR's Contact Centre for guidance in creating a ResearchNet account and registering for a CIHR PIN. Potential applicants could also contact CIHR’s Contact Centre should they wish the Contact Centre to assign them a CIHR PIN.

 

SSHRC Partnership Grants - Stage 1

• Value and duration: Applications successful in Stage 1 are valued at up to $20,000. These funds help applicants successful in Stage 1 to prepare for the Stage 2 application.
• Deadline: February 10, 2022 (8 p.m. eastern)

Partnership Grants provide support for new and existing formal partnerships over four to seven years to advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities. This is done through mutual co-operation and sharing of intellectual leadership, as well as through resources as shown by cash and/or in-kind contributions. Partnership Grants are intended for large teams of postsecondary institutions and/or organizations of various types that work in formal collaboration. The objectives are:

• further, refine the question(s) to be addressed;
• establish partnership arrangements, a governance structure and/or an approach/methodology; and
• consolidate their collaborative activities.

WSIB Grants Program: Systematic Review Funding Opportunity

• Value: Up to $175K/year
• Duration: 18 months
• Deadlines: By 5:00 pm (EST) on Wednesday, December 1, 2021

The Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is accepting proposals for the 2021 Grants Program strategic initiative: Occupational exposure to vapours, gases, dusts and fumes and the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Systematic review). The WSIB is interested in awarding a grant for a systematic review of the scientific evidence examining if occupational exposure to vapours, gases, dusts, and fumes causes the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis Grants - Emerging Asocial Society

• Value:  Up to $30,000
• Duration: 1 year
• Deadlines: Friday, December 17, 2021 (Note: Applications must be submitted to the SSHRC’s Online System by 12Noon to allow ORS enough time to e-approve and submit to SSHRC for peer review).

SSHRC has launched a Knowledge Synthesis Grants (KSG) competition to assess the state of research knowledge on the topic of “The Emerging Asocial Society”, under SSHRC’s Imagining Canada’s Future initiative. This call for proposals focuses on the state of knowledge from research on issues related to the growing sense of disconnection, isolation and loneliness in Canadian society. The resulting syntheses will identify roles that the academic, public, private and not-for-profit sectors may play in promoting more connected and resilient communities, and may inform the development of effective tools, robust policies and sustainable practices required to support the transition to a more equitable, healthy and prosperous future.

Open Research Area for the social sciences

• Deadline: Wednesday, 17 November 2021, 16:00 (Central European Time).

The partners of the Open Research Area (ORA) are pleased to announce that the seventh ORA joint funding opportunity is now open. This pre-call announcement is being issued to allow interested researchers to begin discussions with potential research partners ahead of the formal launch of the funding opportunity.

The ORA was created to strengthen international cooperation in social sciences by funding high-quality scientific research projects. SSHRC will support the participation of Canadian researchers from all disciplines of the social sciences and humanities.

Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative

• Value: $7K - $25K for Events | $7K - $50K for Outreach activities
• Duration: 1 year
• Agency Deadline: November 1, 2021; February 1, 2022; May 1, 2022; and August 1, 2022

Following the release of the tri-agency research data management policy in March 2021, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is pleased to announce the extension of the Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative. This initiative aims to continue helping the Canadian social sciences and humanities research community better understand data management, and incorporate data management considerations into research practices.

The initiative will fund at least 10 meritorious Connection Grants proposals per competition for the November 2021, February, May and August 2022 cycles, to support the research community’s development, adoption and dissemination of research data management standards, practices, tools and skills appropriate to their field.

Call for Nominations - Bank of Canada’s 2022 Fellowship Program

• Value and Duration:
  • The Fellowship Award provides annual funding of up to $90,000 to leading academic researchers for a term of up to five years.
  • The Governor’s Award provides annual funding of $30,000 for distinguished emerging researchers for a term of up to two years
• Agency Deadline: November 30, 2021

The Program recognizes academics who are making exemplary contributions to economic and financial research in Canada. The Bank of Canada makes two financial awards available each year to encourage and foster excellence in research that relates to the Bank’s core functions of monetary policy, the financial system, currency and funds management. Potential research topics should align with the Bank’s current research priorities.

The Bank of Canada Fellowship program aims to promote collaboration and partnerships between Bank researchers and leading academics at Canadian post-secondary institutions. It also contributes to the education and development of Canada’s researchers in fields related to the Bank’s core functions. Faculties are asked to email SIRI Specialist Abby Vogus (avogus@yorku.ca) with the name(s) of the candidate(s) by September 15. Royal Society of Canada Nomination Process

Please see below two memos regarding the Royal Society of Canada, 2022 institutional nominations for Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC) and the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists (the College).

For all working on RSC nominations, the new guidelines for this year’s RSC competition were released this week.

Please note that interested applicants are not required to submit nominations using the institutional process. In addition to the institutional process, interested applicants may be nominated directly by existing Fellows of the Royal Society. Fellow-led Nominations are fully supported by Faculty-based Research Office staff. As external letters of reference are required, interested applicants are encouraged to begin the preparation of files in advance of the expected launch date of the 2022 competition in September (deadline December 1, 2022).

Fulbright Grants in the US for Canadian Faculty Members- Competition Open

• Deadline: Monday, November 15, 2021, by 11:59 pm (EST)

Fulbright Canada recently announced a Call for Applications for its Canadian Scholar Awards 2022-2023 Program. This program strengthens binational collaborative research and promotes thoughtful public debate on topics that reflect the broad range of contemporary issues relevant to Canada, the United States, and the relationship between the two countries. There are two streams:

• Fulbright Canada Research Chairs Program The award ranges from US $25,000 to US$50,000 for 4 – 9 months.
• Traditional Fulbright Scholar Award The award is US $12,500 for one semester (4 months)

Mitacs Globalink Research Award Thematic Call

• Value $6,000
• Duration: 16 to 24 weeks
• Deadlines: By 5:00p.m. PST on Wednesday December 1, 2021

The Globalink Research Award is designed to offer senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows an opportunity to participate in a 12-24 week research project with an international partner country (Brazil, mainland China, India, Mexico, France. Turkey and Vietnam). To foster future opportunities for researcher mobility, and help plant the seeds for recovery, Mitacs has launched a special initiative in cooperation with several of its international partners.  This opportunity is a competitive call for applications to the Mitacs Globalink Research Award program in areas of strategic importance for the Canadian and international research communities.

Mitacs Business Strategy Internship Program

• Value
  • $10K; the partner pays $5K and no university funds are required $15K; the partner pays only $7.5K and no university funds are required.
  • At $15K, participants have the option of using up to $5K for specified project costs or to top up the intern stipend.

• Duration: 4 months
• Deadlines: Rolling

Mitacs is accepting applications to its new Business Strategy Internship Program. This program allows students to apply their technical expertise to business challenges to support an organization’s innovative activities. A summary is provided below. The main objective is to enable the brightest students to undertake a collaborative internship with businesses or eligible not-for-profit organizations (NFPs). The award is open to students across all disciplines, from law to STEM to social sciences and humanities. Mitacs Accelerate SME Discount

Mitacs has just launched a special SME discount call for the Accelerate program. Faculty members that are collaborating with a company/Not for Profit (NFP) that has fewer than 500 employees, can get a discounted rate for the company contribution. The main points of the program are:

1. The contribution is $3,750+HST from the partner + $11,250 from Mitacs (instead of the standard $7,500+HST from partner and $7,500 from Mitacs) for a 4-6 month internship unit.
2. Submission deadline is February 1st, 2022, or while quantities last.
3. 1 discounted unit per named intern
4. Partner has to be 1-499 employees, including NFPs

SSHRC Partnership Development Grants (PDG)

• Value: $75,000 – $200,000
• Duration: 1 – 3 years
• Agency Deadline: Monday, November 15, 2021

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is accepting applications to the 2021 Partnership Development Grants (PDG) competition. Objectives are to:

• develop research and/or related activities in the social sciences and humanities—these can include knowledge mobilization and the meaningful involvement of students and emerging scholars, by fostering new partnerships with existing and/or potential partners; or
• design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities that can result in best practices or models—these can either be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level.

SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants (PEG)

SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants (PEG) provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. The small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through Partnership Engage Grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. NSERC Alliance Missions Grants

• Value $100K - $500K/year
• Duration: 2 years
• Deadlines: Tuesday, November 30, 2021 by 9:00am

The NSERC Alliance Missions grants, a unique opportunity aimed at addressing critical science and technology challenges that can play a pivotal role in Canada’s economy. The objectives are:

1. to accelerate the translation of Canada’s world-class research results into economic opportunities; and/or
2. inform policy that could have an impact on Canada’s economy.

Projects supported by these grants will facilitate collaboration between academic researchers and private-sector, public-sector and/or not-for-profit partners to address challenges facing partner organization(s). Teams can comprise one or more researchers with any number of partner organization(s). Alternatively, grants can support the R&D activities of a network of academic researchers (three or more researchers) and partner organization(s) that respond to new economic opportunities that are not identified in the list of challenges.

NSERC - Alliance Grants: Option 2

NSERC has released details about a new Alliance Option 2 two-pager that provides an overview of what the NSERC - Alliance Grants option 2 funding is all about. The projects should aim to address and are driven by an unmet societal need, meaning that the results matter not just to the partner organizations but also to the public. Refer to the NSERC resources page to access the best practices webinar, a summary of NSERC requirements and more. The results should be broadly shared in various formats, allowing even non-specialists outside the project to understand and use the results.
