Pat Armstrong: Strategic Partnerships under COVID-19

In a timely and strategic partnership, Professor Pat Armstrong (sociology), has co-authored a report for The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA): Re-imagining Long-term Residential Care in the COVID-19 Crisis, funded with support from SSHRC.

"The devastation in the wake of COVID-19 has dramatically exposed structural weaknesses in long-term care long documented by our team, among others, ”Professor Armstrong explained. “As researchers, we often work out of the spotlight and our contributions, as well as our impact, are often difficult to see. COVID-19 has made this work visible and valuable, contributing to the call for fundamental change."

On the importance of collaborative research, she emphasized: "Our work on long-term care has reinforced my commitment to team-based, interdisciplinary, international research that allows learning with and from each other. Our history of working together means we can respond quickly to the current crisis. Involving senior and junior faculty along with students and post-doctoral fellows in conducting primary research creates rich soil for developing ground-breaking, evidence-informed recommendations for promising practices for making care as good as it can be. Pre-Announcement Notice: LA&PS York Research Chair Internal Call for Proposals

The following is a reminder that the Dean’s Office will formally launch in June its annual internal competition for York Research Chairs. In anticipation of the call, we can share the following new features of the internal process to assist with your plans for developing an application:

  • A research program description – increased to maximum 1,500 words
  • A research leadership description – increased to maximum 500 words
  • 1.5 FCE course release per year for the duration of the YRC term (5 years)
  • Deadline for the LA&PS Internal Competition: Monday, August 23, 2021.

Detailed guidelines on the LA&PS process for nominations for the YRC program will be provided in June. Updated program guidelines and an information session will also be provided by VPRI in June and will be communicated to Faculty Members. If you have questions about the YRC internal process in LA&PS, please contact Dr. Chris Hendershot, Grant Development Specialist supporting the York Research Chair program (hender@yorku.ca).

Pre-Announcement Notice: Black Scholars Research Fund - Round 2

The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) has established the LA&PS Black Scholars Research Fund (BSRF), max. $5,000, to support innovative research project ideas from qualified eligible applicants who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent. Projects may be standalone or part of a broader research program. the faculty will launch a second round of a call for proposal from eligible applicants at the assistant or associate professor level. The deadline for the new applications is anticipated to be July 15 with results expected in early August. Full details including an updated application form will be circulated to the faculty later this week. Questions about this program may be directed to lapsrsc@yorku.ca.

MobilizeU Summer 2021

The Knowledge Mobilization Unit is pleased to announce the Summer 2021 dates of our 8-week self-directed MobilizeU course. The course is free for all York University, Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of Winnipeg faculty, postdocs, graduate students, staff and alumni who have graduated within the last two years. There is a nominal fee for all other participants. Participants will learn about knowledge mobilization planning, effective ways to share academic research with society and how to measure and communicate the impacts of their research.

Coming this summer: New Resource to Support Non-indigenous Researchers

The Indigenous Council will soon offer an indispensable guide for non-Indigenous researchers hoping to undertake Indigenous research. York University has an enduring commitment to the pursuit of knowledge that comes from differing perspectives and ways of knowing. Indigenous knowledge is integral to this. And an expansive guide for those undertaking Indigenous research will help to facilitate these aspirations. The new interactive web-based research tool will be available this summer.

Richmond Scholarship: Forced Migration & Environmental Change

  • Value: $2,000
  • Application Deadline: June 1, 2021

The Anthony H. Richmond Scholarship will be awarded annually to a York University graduate-level student conducting research on interactions between refugees, forced migration, immigration and/or resettlement within or outside counties of origin and the environment. Graduate students (MA, PhD) enrolled at York University doing their MRP, thesis or dissertation on the stated theme are eligible to apply. Learn more and apply to the Richmond Scholarship here.

New Tri-council Pilot Committee in Support of Interdisciplinary Research

The three research funding agencies have launched the Tri-agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee as a one-year pilot program. It will provide an option for researchers working in interdisciplinary research to direct their applications to a committee composed of experts from across the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and health sciences. Individuals applying for SSHRC Insight Grants, CIHR Project Grants, and NSERC Discovery Horizons Grants will be eligible for their applications to be reviewed by this new interdisciplinary peer review committee.

The launch of the Tri-agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee is part of the tri-agency response to recommendations made in the final report of the Fundamental Science Review, whose goal is to ensure the agencies have robust mechanisms to review and support interdisciplinary research.

Update on the Aid to Scholarly Journals Funding Opportunity

  • Deadline: September 10, 2021.

As noted in the May 3 Digest Newsletter, the eligibility criteria, including open access eligibility criteria, are the same. Please note, however, that the transition period allowed during the last competition has concluded and will no longer be offered. The value of the grant, the duration of the grant and the grant selection process have not changed. In addition, in light of the impacts of COVID-19 on journals, the ASJ 2021 competition will relax the regular publication minimums and requirements for submission of statistics data for journals impacted by COVID-19. Journals will be able to describe the impacts of COVID-19 within their application. We have received further clarification from SSHRC regarding new features to this program.

The Aid to Scholarly Journals website will be updated by SSHRC on June 25, 2021.

SSHRC Connection Grants - Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative (Final Call)

The Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative offers the research community Connections Grants to support the development, adoption and dissemination of research data management standards, practices, tools and skills appropriate to their field. SSHRC has communicated that the August competition will be the final one for the special Connection Grant call. In addition to the special call, Connection Grants on any eligible project may also be submitted to the program. Mitacs Globalink Research Internship

The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) is now accepting faculty submissions for summer 2022. GRI pairs faculty in Canada with international undergrads for 12-week research projects from May to October.  The objective is to offer international undergraduates from different countries the opportunity to participate in research internships under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines, from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences. Trans-Atlantic Platform Recovery, Renewal and Resilience in a Post-Pandemic World (RRR) Call for Proposals

  • Value:
    • Canadian applicants can request up to a maximum of $200,000 per proposal
    • Quebec applicants eligible to apply for SSHRC funding may also apply for a supplement from the FRQSC: $50, 000$ to $75,000$ (+ Indirect cost of research depending on funds available)
  • Duration: 24 - 36 months
  • Deadlines:
    • Compulsory Intention to Submit due at agency June 14, 2021, no later than midnight BR

The Trans-Atlantic Platform – Recovery, Renewal and Resilience in a Post-Pandemic World Call for Proposals require a transnational research partnership with a minimum of three eligible research partners (3 countries) addressing one or more of the following five challenges:

  • reducing inequalities and vulnerabilities
  • building a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable society
  • fostering democratic governance and political participation
  • advancing responsible and inclusive digital innovation
  • ensuring effective and accurate communication and media

Imagining Canada’s Future Ideas Lab: Canada and the Circular Economy

The Imagining Canada’s Future (ICF) Ideas Lab is an exciting, new two-year pilot program designed to encourage innovative research partnerships and projects. By breaking down methodological barriers and empowering participants to explore new approaches to research, the ICF Ideas Lab will aid knowledge sharing and provide foundations for future interdisciplinary projects. SSHRC is looking for innovative scholars from all disciplines to be part of this pilot program. To apply to participate in the workshop, submit a letter of interest and CV before July 16, 2021. NSERC Discovery Horizons Grants

NSERC recently announced a new Discovery Horizons Grants funding opportunity to support interdisciplinary investigator-initiated research to advance knowledge in the natural sciences and engineering (NSE). The main objective is to answer natural sciences and engineering (NSE) research questions that are best addressed through interdisciplinary approaches. OHTN HIV Endgame Funding Program call

  • Deadlines:
    • LOI Application Deadline: June 2, 2021 at 5pm EST

Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN) has launched a new call for the HIV Endgame Funding Program. It will offer four types of award:

  • Game Changer Awards (2 streams): $50,000 - $250,000 for up to 2 o 3 years.
  • Community-Based Project and Participatory Evaluation Awards: Annual amount: $25,000 – $50,000 for 1 year.
  • Student Leadership Awards (Up to $25,000),
  • Incubator Awards: Maximum annual funding: $50,000 – $300,000 for up to 2 years.

Mitacs Elevate Program

    • An exclusive professional development curriculum valued at $7,500 per year

Mitacs Elevate is a postdoctoral fellowship with an exclusive professional development curriculum component. Mitacs Elevate is now accepting proposal submissions for two years of postdoctoral funding in addition to extensive customized professional development training. Catalyzing Interdisciplinary Research Clusters

The Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation (VPRI) has launched an inaugural call for a new Internal program, Catalyzing Interdisciplinary Research Clusters.  Submissions to this new internal grant program require approval of the Associate Dean, Research & Graduate Studies, and the number of projects in eligible categories that can be funded are limited. Therefore, any Faculty Member who is interested in submitting an application should contact Associate Dean Ravi de Costa (adres@yorku.ca) and David Cuff, Director, Strategic Research & Partnerships (dcuff@yorku.ca) as soon as possible to discuss the proposed project prior to completing an NOI.

The new opportunity is being offered through NSERC’s Alliance grants and Mitac’s Accelerate programs. SSHRC Joint Initiative for Digital Citizen Research – Connection Grants

SSHRC announced the relaunching of the Connection Grants arm of the Initiative for Digital Citizen Research (IDCR), a joint initiative with the Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH). The IDCR aims to develop a better understanding of the impacts of online disinformation in Canada in order to better inform programs and policies, build Canada’s capacity to conduct research on – and related to – countering online disinformation and other related online harms, and help foster a community of researchers engaged with digital citizenship and online disinformation in Canada. It also aims to provide assistance to selected events and outreach activities for short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives.

SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants (PEG)

SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants (PEG) provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. The small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through Partnership Engage Grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. NSERC - Alliance Grants: Option 2

NSERC has released details about a new Alliance Option 2 two-pager that provides an overview of what the NSERC Alliance Option 2 funding is all about. The projects should aim to address and are driven by an unmet societal need, meaning that the results matter not just to the partner organizations but also to the public. Refer to the NSERC resources page to access the best practices webinar, a summary of NSERC requirements and more. The results should be broadly shared in various formats, allowing even non-specialists outside the project to understand and use the results. CIHR Funding Opportunities (now updated)

A list of funding opportunities through CIHR can be found on this page of the agency’s website. Please be attentive to any COVID-19 update that appears as part of the posting for specific opportunities. Due to the large volume of RFAs, the Office of Research Services has created a simplified Excel spreadsheet that will make it easier for researchers to locate the funding call that is most appropriate to their research area. You will be required to enter your Passport York user ID and password for YU Link to gain access to the spreadsheet. Alternatively, you may contact ORS at research@yorku.ca to send you the file as an attachment.
