York U’s Policy on Postdoctoral Researchers

At its meeting of April 27, 2017, Senate approved a Policy on Postdoctoral Researchers at York University based on a recommendation of its Academic Policy, Planning and Research Committee. The new policy is now in effect.

CIHR Announces Delay on Project Grants

Roderick McInnes, Acting President of CIHR, announced the following on May 5, 2017:

We have recently completed Stage 2 of peer review for the current Project Grant Competition. This experience has confirmed that the current reformed project grant competition process is unsustainable on many levels. As a consequence, it is clear that significant changes are required, and that these must be informed through an iterative consultation process with Scientific Directors, College Chairs, and other community leaders. Some elements of the new system may have advantages, and these too need to be considered. This process will take time.

Therefore, the Project Grant Competition registration that was to close on May 30, 2017 will be delayed until August 15, 2017, with an application deadline of September 15, 2017. To mitigate the impact of this delay on the research community, CIHR will financially extend all existing Open Operating and Project Grants scheduled to expire between September 30, 2017 and March 30, 2018 until March 31, 2018. Subsequent competition dates will be determined through the above-mentioned consultation process.

SSHRC to Introduce New Partnership Engage Grants

SSHRC has announced it will soon launch the “Partnership Engage Grants,” small-scale grants which are designed for a single partner organization from the not-for-profit, public or private sector. More details.

SSHRC Tweaks Insight Grant for Fall 2017 Competition

SSHRC has recently announced that in the fall 2017 competition, applicants to the SSHRC Insight Grant program will be able to choose from one of two streams, depending on the amount of funding required: 1) Stream A for requests between $7,000 and $100,000 over two to five years; or 2) Stream B for requests between $100,000 and $400,000 over two to five years. The possibility of a grant of only two years’ duration is also a change.

SSHRC Makes Adjustments in Relation to Health-related Research

At the recent meeting of the Canadian Association of Research Administrators, SSHRC announced that it will extend its support of health-related research to include work concerned with: health policy and management; health ethics; and social construction of health and health behaviour. Other areas will remain ineligible: clinical education; clinical research and therapy; and kinesiology and epidemiology. While this change won’t be reflected on the SSHRC website until June, questions can be sent to Francois Simard (Francois.Simard@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca).

SSHRC Adjusts Reporting Mechanism

SSHRC will be removing access to the Final Research Report and the Activity report from the SSHRC online system, as of May 23, 2017. All funding opportunities must now submit the new Achievement Report. If the end of grant report is not yet due and the grant holder wishes to wait until a later date to submit the report, no further action is required. When they are ready to submit the report, they can do so through the Achievement Report. Any grant holders who have started a Final Research Report are encouraged to submit it to SSHRC before the information and access is removed from the system. For any questions related to the Achievement Report, please contact corporate-performance@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca.

Vacancies on SSHRC’s Governing Council

The Privy Council Office has recently posted the notice of opportunity for vacancies on SSHRC’s governing council on its website, with a closing date of 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on June 5, 2017.

The Government of Canada has developed a new more transparent process for Governor in Council (GIC) appointments. Among the major changes to the process is the public posting of available positions, for which all interested and qualified candidates may apply. The members of SSHRC’s governing Council are distinguished representatives from the academic, not-for-profit, public and private sectors appointed by the Governor in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister, following a formal selection process led by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. In order to reach the greatest number of potentially qualified candidates, SSHRC encourages you to share the notice with your network.
