Internal Notices
NEW ORS CHECKLIST - REQUIRED FOR ALL EXTERNAL FUNDING APPLICATIONS
Effective immediately, faculty members who are applying for external research funding must use the new version of the ORS Checklist. Note: all Checklists now require a signature from the Dean’s Office - i.e. the Associate Dean Graduate Studies & Research. As most of you know, your Research Officer will be able to help coordinate this.
This means you can no longer have an Organized Research Unit (ORU) Director sign the Checklist. There is still a place to signal affiliation with your ORU, so if you plan to run your project through the ORU and are including it on the Checklist, you should continue the practice of notifying the Director of these plans.
In order to ensure the timely receipt of signatures, it is recommended that you follow the new LA&PS Guidelines for securing institutional signatures and approvals.
FALL RUSH - MANDATORY DEADLINES
Please note that there are internal mandatory submission deadlines in effect for the following major Tri-Council grant competition applications:
- SSHRC: Insight (by 9:00am on Thursday, October 12, 2017)
- NSERC: Discovery, Northern Research Supplement (NRS) (by 9:00am on Monday, 30 October 2017)
- CIHR: Project Scheme (by 9:00am on Wednesday, 13 September 2017)
On each of these respective deadlines, you should provide your Research Officer with the completed ORS Checklist, along with supporting documentation outlining relevant institutional contributions and a copy of the application (must be final budget). In turn, your Research Officer will review your documents to ensure everything is complete, alert you to any necessary changes, and secure the final ORS Checklist signature on your behalf.
LA&PS SERVICE LEVEL STANDARDS FOR APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT
In anticipation of the Fall Rush grants season and to offer guidance around the application development services available to the research community, the LA&PS Research Unit has established service level standards for faculty members to use while planning the preparation of their external grant applications. Within four different prescribed window of time, we have outlined the types of services that faculty members can reasonably expect to receive from their designated Research Officer.

When you are planning to apply for external research funding, you are encouraged to be in contact with your designated Research Officer as early as possible in the application process. Your Research Officer is extremely knowledgeable about the process of applying for external research funding and will be able to review application drafts, advise you on budget planning, help you target your proposal to the specific opportunity, and identify special requirements for the application. NEW ETHICS FORMS IN EFFECT SEPTEMBER 7, 2017
The Office of Research Ethics has revamped its ethics forms for student research involving human participants. These updated forms, and those of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, are now complete, and ready to be used. The ORE website has been updated to include a number of new resources for Delegated Ethics Review Committees, Course Directors and Graduate and Undergraduate students.
To support the release of the new forms and documents, The Office of Research Ethics is offering the following information and training sessions:

REQUESTS FOR YORK UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP ON SSHRC PARTNERSHIP AND PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
Please note all requests for partnership on SSHRC Partnership Grants (both full application and Letter of Intent) must be made at least 20 business days before the funder deadline. This academic year’s deadlines are as follows:
- 4PM, October 3, 2017 for Full Applications (Funder application deadline is November 1)
- 4PM, January 18, 2018 Letters of Intent (SSHRC application deadline is February 15, 2018)
For Partnership Development Grants requests must be made at least 10 business days before the funder deadline, i.e. on or before:
- 4PM, November 16, 2017 for Partnership Development Applications (SSHRC Application deadline is November 30)
Please note that other institutions may have internal deadlines that require partnerships to be confirmed earlier. Please be sure to allow for the required advanced notice before the earliest mandatory deadline.
For questions or to submit a request for partnership in one of the above competitions, please contact Diana Frasca, Strategic and Institutional Research Specialist, Office of Research Services (dfrasca@yorku.ca).
If the application in one of the above competitions is accompanied by a memorandum of understanding, research collaboration agreement, or equivalent, it will also need to be reviewed, approved, and signed by VPRI and should be submitted to Andrea Thomas in the Office of Research Services (tandrea@yorku.ca) for review following the same above deadlines.

Internal Grants
LA&PS SEED GRANT FOR COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH INITIATIVES
Deadline: September 15
Description: LA&PS full-time faculty members are invited to apply for seed funding to build new research collaborations with scholarly and/or community partners by supporting the specific costs associated with bringing key partners together to explore and develop new research and research funding opportunities.
CONTRACT FACULTY RESEARCH GRANTS FUND (CUPE 3903)
Deadline: October 1, 2017
Description: To encourage individual research and study by defraying research costs. Value: Research grants - up to $8,000. Duration: One year.
CONTRACT FACULTY CONFERENCE TRAVEL FUND (CUPE 3903)
Deadline: October 1, 2017
Description: To support contract faculty members who are giving papers; have been asked to give commentaries or to chair sessions; or are attending conferences. Eligible expenses include travel, registration, accommodation and subsistence. Value: Up to $2,000. Duration: No more than one grant per year.
SSHRC RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM (ORS)
Deadline: October 31
Description: To provide support to full-time faculty, professional librarians and current Postdoctoral Fellows for stand-alone, small-scale projects and for projects that will lead to the development of larger SSHRC applications or other external funding.

LA&PS TRAVEL GRANT FOR DISSEMINATION
Deadlines: November 1
Description: LA&PS offers this grant to offset costs associated with the public dissemination of research, scholarship, or creativity. Eligibility: Full-time YUFA faculty members and senior scholars in LA&PS. In the case of CLAs and SRCs, travel must also occur within the term of the appointment. Applications must be submitted in advance of the presentation.
MARIANO A. ELIA RESEARCH FUND (ORS)
Deadline: November 1
To support small-scale research projects where a significant contribution to Italian-Canadian studies will be made. Eligible expenses include research costs and travel to conferences.

MINOR RESEARCH GRANT (LA&PS FACULTY COUNCIL)
Deadline: November 15
Funding for research projects: eligible expenses include personnel, research travel, subsistence costs. Amount: Up to $5,000. Eligibility: An individual is eligible to receive one research grant every 2 fiscal years.
External Notices
ACCESS TO UNSPENT FUNDS IN NSERC AND SSHRC COST CENTRES - NEW RULES
A new rule by NSERC and SSHRC effective 2016-2017 requires holders of extension cost centres to spend more than 50% of their opening balance by March 31 of the following year in order to avoid a return of unspent funds to the agency.

DAAD FRANCO-GERMAN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME
Submission of statement of interest to ORS: October 3, 2017

Description: The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) recently launched a new funding program, to undertake research in the fields of climate change, energy transition, and the Earth system to advance sustainability research. Fellows of the programme will be given the opportunity to set up their own research group at a German University or research institution. Awards are available in two categories – Junior researchers (valued at up to 1 million euros over 4 years) and Senior researchers (up to 1.5 million euros over 4 years).
NSERC RESEARCH TOOLS AND INSTRUMENTS (RTI), CATEGORY 1
ORS Review Deadline: October 11, 2017
ORS Submission Deadline: 12 Noon, October 25, 2017
NSERC Deadline: October 25, 2017
Description: One year grants valued at up to $150,000, RTI grants foster and enhance the discovery, innovation and training capability of university researchers in the natural sciences and engineering by supporting the purchase of research equipment.
NSERC will only accept requests:
- For tools and instruments that form a comprehensive system intended to support NSERC funded research in the natural sciences and engineering (bundling of unrelated tools and instruments, will not be accepted).
- For the purchase of new equipment, or for the fabrication of equipment, or for the repair or upgrade of equipment, or for the fabrication of equipment that is not readily available off the shelf.
- For equipment that is purchased after the application deadline.
*NEW* – NSERC has eliminated the university quota. Researchers can submit one RTI application per competition, either as an applicant or a co-applicant, but not as both.
SSHRC PARTNERSHIP GRANT - LETTER OF INTENT (Internal Launch)
ORS Deadline (Internal Notice of Intent): 9AM, November 27, 2017
SSHRC Deadline: February 15, 2018
Description: All researchers planning to apply to the SSHRC Partnership Grants program – Letter of Intent phase – are required to submit an Internal Notice of Intent to Diana Frasca, Strategic and Institutional Research Initiatives Specialist no later than 9am on November 27, 2017.

CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS JOHN G. DIEFENBAKER AWARD
ORS Deadline: October 18, 2017
Agency Deadline: November 1, 2017
Description: The John G. Diefenbaker Award allows a distinguished German scholar in the humanities to conduct research in Canada and spend brief periods gaining further experience at American institutions.
CANADA-US FULLBRIGHT PROGRAM: AWARDS FOR CANADIAN SCHOLARS
Agency Deadline: 5PM, November 15, 2017 (EST)
Traditional Fulbright awards are open to Canadian scholars in all fields and are designed to enable emerging and established scholars, post-doctoral researchers and experienced professionals to conduct research, teach, or undertake a combination of both activities for one semester or a full academic year at any university or research center of their choice in the United States.
Fulbright Visiting Research Chairs are intended for Canadian citizens who are exceptional scholars and/or experienced professionals who wish to conduct research and/or lecture in the United States.
