2024-25 Highlights
Advancing YU
Advancing YU hosted their 2024-25 celebration event for women and/or Black-identifying students in March. The event provided a platform for program participants to share their experiences, network with alumni mentors and collect their completion certificates.
Tom Janes Award for Black Scholars
In 2024, recipients of the Tom Janes Award for Black Scholars were honoured at a special celebration event that recognized their achievements and provided space to share their lived experiences as Black students within LA&PS.
This year, the Internationally Educated Professionals (IEP) Program celebrated success by hosting the Celebrate Success Ceremony, honouring students and alumni—including those in the Bridging Program—who have completed the IEP certificate or reached significant career milestones.
Explore YU
In summer 2024, we hosted Explore YU — a five-day summer camp designed to introduce Grade 10 and 11 domestic and international high school students from marginalized communities to post-secondary life at York.
2024-25 Achievements
This year, LA&PS awarded $4,800 in bursaries to co-op students to help address socioeconomic challenges, provide financial assistance to participate in co-op and promote access of opportunities.
We awarded $22,900 in emergency bursaries to domestic students and $10,100 to international students to support their access to quality education despite insufficient funds due to limited employment, unforeseen extenuating circumstances, and health and wellness concerns.
The AYA Program, supporting youth in care, expanded this year to include not only it's annual Open House event but also the successful launch of a new workshop series focused on mental health and learning skills for participating high school youth registered with Children's Aid Societies across Ontario. 6 workshops were successfully delivered.
Since launching the Advancing YU mentorship and scholarship program to support women and Black-identifying students, the program has awarded over $450,000 in scholarships, has provided mentorship to over 450 students and has successfully engaged 150 alumni mentors.
In an effort to make LA&PS a more inclusive destination for students from equity-seeking groups, we secured $750,000 for the Tom Janes Award for Black Scholars, which has awarded $5,000 in renewable scholarships to 42 Black students in LA&PS since 2020.
In partnership with York International, we developed and launched the International Student Experience Survey to better understand the factors that influence international students to leave, stay or return to York University.
The LA&PS Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Professionals (IEP) is designed to assist newcomers to the country in navigating the complexities of the Canadian job market. This year 93 students joined the IEP Foundation Program, focused on professional communication, leadership, IT, law and management skills, while 90 IEP students also graduated with the Professional Certificate program in Canadian business and IT between June 2024-25.
The IEP Foundation Program was granted $1.2M by Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada in March, for the future delivery of the program from 2025-28, to support 220 newcomer and refugee participants.
The Faculty's Women's Studies Bridging Program offers academic bridging courses for women who want to upgrade their writing and speaking skills and explore the possibility of university study. In April 2025, the Global & Community Engagement team brought together 22 women enrolled in the Women's Studies Bridging Program for a celebration of their achievements and opportunity to hear about the experience of transitioning to a university degree at York from LA&PS' oldest graduate!
This year we allocated $15,000 in funding to our LA&PS Bridging Programs (Women's Bridging, IEP and Sanctuary Scholars Programs) through the Atkinson College Students and Alumni Associations Endowment.
This year, the Faculty established the new Elizabeth Sabiston Graduate Scholarship in the Study of Women – the transformative $2.5M gift and scholarship will ensure that research in women's studies remains a central focus for future scholars.
The Faculty distributed $112,000 from Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL) iHub Funding to 56 LA&PS domestic students ($2,000 each) enrolled in unpaid placement courses for academic credit to reduce their financial barriers (transportation, childcare etc.) and support work integrated learning experiences. Additionally, $17,000 was allocated to 17 international students ($1,000 each) enrolled in unpaid placement courses.
$14,000 was distributed to 10 LA&PS students through Riipen Advance Ontario paid projects to help students complete 60 hours of work with an employer on a co-curricular project, providing valuable workplace experience.
LA&PS also received $1.5M in support of the Hédi Bouraoui Graduate Fellowship in Liberal Arts and the Hédi Bouraoui Research Fund, reinforcing a lifelong commitment to the humanities and to graduate students.
This year we disbursed $25,000 to support 15 different York events and projects through our Global & Community Engagement Events, Outreach & Collaborative Projects Funds.
We improved student awareness of awards this year and successfully administered 87% of LA&PS' 186 student awards to help students bridge economic gaps.
We launched a targeted early alert campaign in the winter term to increase student awareness of financial holds and promote available awards and bursaries. Total video views 22,960; 5880 CRM deliveries (4523 unique opens; unique clicks 506 to student accounts).
Success Stories
We are deeply grateful to both Professor Sabiston and Professor Bouraoui for their many years of devotion and commitment to our students. The Elizabeth (Betty) Sabiston Graduate Scholarship in the Study of Women will inspire students and researchers to engage deeply with women’s studies, just as Professor Sabiston did throughout her career at York.
