Celebrating Black History, Slam Poetry, job opportunities and more

We hope you are enjoying your reading week! At LA&PS, we continue to celebrate Black History Month with two upcoming events. There are also many other great initiatives around “Black Voices, Black Stories” at York. In this edition of The Scoop you’ll hear about the Nellie Library Undergraduate Student Conference & Poetry Slam!, as well as work-study opportunities, a workshop to help you master your next interview and more!

Come Celebrate Black History at Black and Bold

The LA&PS Colleges, Black Excellence and Student Community & Leadership Development (SCLD) invite you to attend a panel discussion on Black Excellence in the educational, legal and medical world. Hear from our panelists about their experience navigating the professional world and how Black Excellence is represented in its own light. York’s Gospel Choir will perform and express the importance of choir in Black culture. Dinner will be provided; registration is required.

Join the Workshop: Leading with Intersectionalities

We bring our social identities into the spaces that we engage with at school, at work and in our communities. In this workshop, we will explore the idea of privilege in an equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) context and how that might affect the interactions we have with others.

Apply Now to be featured at the Nellie Library Undergraduate Student Conference & Poetry Slam!

If you are an undergraduate student at York, and are working on a thought-provoking project, then we invite you to apply to participate in our annual undergraduate student conference. We are looking for projects which are engaged with feminist, anti-racist, intersectional, interdisciplinary and/or decolonizing approaches.
Calling all aspiring and established poets. The Poetry Slam! is open to all undergraduate students at York. Successful applicants will present their work for a maximum of 10 minutes, followed by a brief question-and-answer period.

Are you a LA&PS Colleges affiliated club or council and need direction on how to manage finances? Are you looking for funding resources or are planning an event and want to chat with other student leaders about financing these endeavours? Join Leader Cafe to learn about the supports and resources that are available to you. LA&PS Special Speaker, Charmaine Mohamed from SCLD, will share information on how to manage funding to run your club.

Inspired by the hit film, VCP presents Bring It On: The Musical, a high-energy cheer-tastic show created by some of Broadway's most popular artists. Bring It On: The Musical takes audiences on a high-flying journey that is filled with the complexities of friendship, jealousy, betrayal and forgiveness.
Join us at the Fred Thury Studio Theatre from March 1 - 10 to witness the show of a lifetime. Tickets are pay-what-you-can-afford and can be purchased online or at the door (cash only).
