LA&PS Spotlights

Early Career Scholars: Leila Pourtavaf

Early Career Scholars: Leila Pourtavaf

Continuing our series featuring early career scholars at LA&PS, we highlight Leila Pourtavaf, who joined the History department at LA&PS in 2020. Since then, she has been awarded a Connection Grant for her project “Cosmopolitan Harem.” While Islamic institutions like the harem are often exoticized or demonized in Western and Orientalist narratives, Cosmopolitan Harem offers a more historically accurate and nuanced look at this deeply complex institution, wherein women and various racialized minorities from different classes and cultural backgrounds lived and exercised various levels of social, cultural and political power.

The grant will facilitate and coordinate an exciting collaboration between both academic and non-academic partners, putting Pourtavaf’s scholarship in conversation with the work of other scholars, cultural workers and the general public. The public programming will include an online symposium, a film screening and a workshop hosted at the Elahé Omidyar Mir-Djalali Institute of Iranian Studies at the University of Toronto as well a showcase display in the Aga Khan Museum’s Collections Gallery, and accompanying programming scheduled for fall 2022.

“The Cosmopolis Harem aims to remedy the underrepresentation of women and racialized minorities in 19th century Iranian political and cultural life, and to focus on their contributions to a developing cosmopolitanism in Tehran at the turn of the century,” Explained Pourtavaf. “My hope is that the project provides a public platform that engages students, scholars, and the general public, and presents a view of 19th century Iran that centers the contribution of women and racialized minorities in the social and cultural history of the region.”

Announcing LA&PS Research Events Fund recipient Elena Basile

We are also spotlighting and celebrating our latest LA&PS Research Events Fund  recipient Elena Basile, Department of English and School of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies in support of the “Who Cares?” Speaker Series in collaboration with Roberta Buiani, Glendon (Communications), Scholar in Residence at Sensorium and a Centre for Feminist Research affiliate.

Who Cares? Sustaining Relations of Health Beyond the Time of Crisis is a Speaker Series dedicated to fostering transdisciplinary conversations between doctors, writers, artists, and researchers on contemporary biopolitics of care and the urgent need to move towards more respectful, creative, and inclusive caring practices in the wake of the systemic cracks made evident by the pandemic. “The series aims to activate practical conversations between people who are already engaged in transforming the infrastructures and cultures of care but have often few opportunities to speak to each other,” explained Basile. “These interdisciplinary dialogues will enable the sharing of emerging epistemologies, new material approaches and pedagogies that could take us beyond the current crisis.”

The series program kicks off on Monday, February 28 and will continue throughout March and April, featuring participatory performances, roundtables, keynote speeches and two art exhibits in the Canadian Language Museum (Glendon Campus) and the D.G. Ivey Library of New College, at the University of Toronto, respectively.

“Who Cares” is an excellent example of different academic and non-academic groups coming together for research and social impact with funding from SSHRC, New College at the University of Toronto, and LA&PS at York University. Along with the generous contributions of the Centre for Feminist Research, Sensorium Centre for Digital Arts and Technology, and The Canadian Language Museum, among many others. This series is also co-produced in collaboration with the ArtSci Salon.
