LA&PS Travel Grant for Dissemination

Description: LA&PS offers this grant to offset costs associated with the public dissemination of research, scholarship, or creativity. Eligibility: Full-time YUFA faculty members and senior scholars in LA&PS. In the case of CLAs and SRCs, travel must also occur within the term of the appointment. Applications must be submitted in advance of the presentation.

Contract Faculty Conference Travel Fund (CUPE)

Deadline: March 1

Description: To support contract faculty members who are giving papers; have been asked to give commentaries or to chair sessions; or are attending conferences. Eligible expenses include travel, registration, accommodation and subsistence. Value: Up to $2,000. Duration: No more than one grant per year.

Contract Faculty Research Grants Fund (CUPE)

Description: To encourage individual research and study by defraying research costs. Value: Research grants – up to $8,000. Release time course directorship grants – salary equivalent to one full-course directorship. Duration: One year.

Mariano A. Elia Research Fund (ORS) (passport York Login)

SSHRC Research Opportunity Grants Program (ORS) (passport York Login)

Description: To provide support to full-time faculty, professional librarians and current Postdoctoral Fellows for stand-alone, small-scale projects and for projects that will lead to the development of larger SSHRC applications or other external funding.

LA&PS Support for Scholarly Journals

Description: The objective of this fund, at present a 5-year pilot initiative, is to offset costs related to the successful operations of scholarly journals for which LA&PS faculty members hold substantial, on-going senior editorial roles.

Minor Research Grant (LA&PS Faculty Council)

Deadline: April 15

Description: The adjudicated vehicle through which LA&PS dispenses the YUFA Faculty/Library Research Grant Funding and the YUFA Junior Faculty/Librarian Fund. Funding for research projects, eligible expenses include personnel, research travel, subsistence costs. Amount: Up to $5,000. Eligibility: An individual is eligible to receive one research grant every 2 fiscal years.

SSHRC Conference Opportunity Grants Program (ORS)

Description: To provide assistance for attendance at national and international scholarly conferences for which the applicant is giving a paper, making a poster presentation, or featured at a solo or 2 person opening of an exhibition, a principal screening, premier performance of dance, theatre or musical production.

Bridge Funding for NSERC Researchers in LA&PS

The Office of Research Services would like to remind you of the upcoming deadline for the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Engage Grants competition.  These grants were introduced to better address the short-term research needs, challenges and opportunities facing organizations in the not-for-profit, public and private sectors.   A summary is provided below.

Objectives

• To provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector;
• To respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors; and
• To allow non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers to access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.

SSHRC welcomes applications involving Aboriginal research, as well as those involving research-creation.

SSHRC invites all applicants to review Imagining Canada’s Future’s six future challenge areas and subquestions, and to consider addressing one or more of these areas in their research proposal.

GrantsSolutions.gov recently announced that the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) and the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) are soliciting applications under the following program: Research on the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR).  A summary is provided below.

Objectives

• To solicit applications for projects to conduct innovative research related to the prevention of research misconduct, protection of whistleblowers, and the furtherance of research integrity in the country and internationally.
• To further develop the evidence base for ORI and others to create or modify educational programs to encourage the responsible conduct of research.

Specifically, the ORI seeks to:

• Identify risk factors that make misconduct more likely;
• Create an evidence base for proactive interventions;
• Build on lessons learned through previous research and the experiences of those who have been involved in guiding research misconduct proceedings; and
• Support the development of tools that can be used to more easily identify research misconduct in images and statistical results.

Killam Research Fellowship

Objectives
To support outstanding scholars (normally full professors at Canadian universities and research institutes) to carry out their groundbreaking projects in the humanities, social sciences, health sciences, engineering and interdisciplinary studies within these fields.

Killam Research Fellowships provide two years of release time from teaching and administrative duties to individual scholars who wish to pursue independent research. The fellowships are awarded to individuals, but the funds are paid to and administered by universities or research institutes.

Note: The award is not intended as a subsidy for the overall research or teaching program of a department, institute or centre, and it is not offered for work undertaken as part of a degree program

An individual may win this award only once.

Value
Killam Research Fellowships provide release time and are valued at $70,000 per year. The funds are paid to the university or research institution which employs the Fellow.  Fellowship recipients must obtain support for research and laboratory costs from other sources.

The university or research institution that employs the Killam Research Fellow is expected to relieve him or her of all teaching and administrative responsibilities, and to continue to pay the Fellow’s full salary and benefits during the full tenure of the fellowship. The fellowship funds assist the university or research institution in defraying the costs of replacing the Fellow and in paying the Fellow’s salary and benefits during the two-year fellowship period.

2018 Mobility Funding for Researchers from the Embassy of France in Canada

SSHRC/Economic and Social Research Council (United Kingdom) international competition to assess the state of research knowledge on Canada-UK trade relationships

SSHRC will be accepting applications through its Knowledge Synthesis Grants Program.

Objectives
To support researchers, teams of researchers and knowledge users in producing knowledge syntheses and scoping reviews that:

• Support the use of evidence in decision-making, and the application of best practices
• Assist in developing future research agendas

Applicants must address the following three objectives in their proposal for a knowledge synthesis or scoping review:

1. State of Knowledge and Research Gaps

• critically assess the state of knowledge in the theme under consideration from a variety of sources, as appropriate;
• identify knowledge strengths and gaps within the theme; and
• identify the most promising policies and practices related to the theme.

2. Research Data

• assess the quality, accuracy and rigour (i.e., methodological approaches) of current work in the field; and
• identify strength and gaps in the quantitative and qualitative data available.

3. Knowledge Mobilization

• engage cross-sectoral stakeholders, including government policy-makers, throughout the project to mobilize knowledge related to promising policies and practices; and
• use effective knowledge mobilization methods to facilitate sharing research findings with multisectoral stakeholders (academic, public, private and not-for-profit sectors)

Knowledge Synthesis Grants are not intended to support original research.  Rather, they are intended to support the synthesis of existing research knowledge and the identification of knowledge strengths and research gaps.

Themes relevant under this Call are:

1. UK-Canada trade relationships in the context of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and Brexit
2. Governance
3. Prosperity and sustainability: Inclusion, labour and environment
4. Trade barriers: From tariffs and regulatory barriers to non-tariff barriers
5. Technological and digital transformations, cross-border trade in services, and geography

Note: Only international collaborative research projects will be accepted to this competition.  Projects must involve a minimum of two researchers, one of whom is affiliated with an institution in Canada, the other with an institution in the UK.  The teams may also include researchers from other countries.

Mitacs Globalink Research Award

Mitacs is accepting applications for its competitive international research funding opportunity for student travel from Canada.  The Mitacs Globalink Research Award funds collaborations between senior undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members at a university overseas.  A summary is provided below.

To offer senior undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in 12-to-24-week research projects supervised by professors at accredited universities in the following Mitacs partner countries: Australia, Brazil, China, EU member countries (In France, both universities and Inria Research Centres are eligible host institutions), Israel, India, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, United Kingdom and United States.
