Canada has positioned itself as a world leader and destination of choice for companies looking to invest in artificial intelligence and innovation. The “Bracing for Impact: The Artificial Intelligence Challenge” conference is a recognition that advancements in AI will have a huge impact on our social, moral and legal norms. It is therefore important to not only fund AI innovation, but we must also move quickly to ensure that robust and effective governance structures are in place.
The conference will feature internationally renowned AI experts who will discuss some of the fundamental questions that arise when machines start to think for themselves.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is holding a series of Question & Answer webinars on the Project Grant: Spring 2018 application.

Internal Grants
SSHRC Conference Opportunity Grants Program (ORS) (passport York Login)
Deadline: February 1
Description: To provide assistance for attendance at national and international scholarly conferences for which the applicant is giving a paper, making a poster presentation, or featured at a solo or 2 person opening of an exhibition, a principal screening, premier performance of dance, theatre or musical production.
LA&PS Travel Grant for Dissemination
Deadline: March 1
Description: LA&PS offers this grant to offset costs associated with the public dissemination of research, scholarship, or creativity. Eligibility: Full-time YUFA faculty members and senior scholars in LA&PS. In the case of CLAs and SRCs, travel must also occur within the term of the appointment. Applications must be submitted in advance of the presentation.
Contract Faculty Conference Travel Fund (CUPE)
Deadline: March 1
Description: To support contract faculty members who are giving papers; have been asked to give commentaries or to chair sessions; or are attending conferences. Eligible expenses include travel, registration, accommodation and subsistence. Value: Up to $2,000. Duration: No more than one grant per year.
Contract Faculty Research Grants Fund (CUPE)
Deadline: March 1
Description: To encourage individual research and study by defraying research costs. Value: Research grants – up to $8,000. Release time course directorship grants – salary equivalent to one full-course directorship. Duration: One year.
Mariano A. Elia Research Fund (ORS) (passport York Login)
Deadline: March 1
Description: To support small-scale research projects where a significant contribution to Italian-Canadian studies will be made. Eligible expenses include research costs and travel to conferences.
SSHRC Research Opportunity Grants Program (ORS) (passport York Login)
Deadline: March 31
Description: To provide support to full-time faculty, professional librarians and current Postdoctoral Fellows for stand-alone, small-scale projects and for projects that will lead to the development of larger SSHRC applications or other external funding.
LA&PS Support for Scholarly Journals (5-year pilot)
Deadline: March 31
The objective of this fund, at present a 5-year pilot initiative, is to offset costs related to the successful operations of scholarly journals for which LA&PS faculty members hold substantial, on-going senior editorial roles.
Minor Research Grant (LA&PS Faculty Council)
Deadline: April 15
Description: The adjudicated vehicle through which LA&PS dispenses the YUFA Faculty/Library Research Grant Funding and the YUFA Junior Faculty/Librarian Fund. Funding for research projects, eligible expenses include personnel, research travel, subsistence costs. Amount: Up to $5,000. Eligibility: An individual is eligible to receive one research grant every 2 fiscal years.

The Mitacs-Accelerate Fellowship
Deadlines

This Fellowship provides long-term funding for a significant part of graduate degree programs.

Master’s students – minimum $30K stipend
PhD students – minimum $72K stipend
The Fellowship also offers national professional development training that helps interns gain in-demand career skills and ensure the success of their projects.

The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Azrieli Global Scholars Program

Objectives: This program provides funding and support to help early career researchers build networks and essential skills to position them as leaders and agents of change within academia and beyond.
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) and be within the first five years of a full-time academic appointment.
Scholars’ research interest must be aligned with the themes of an eligible CIFAR research program. Eligible programs are:

CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars receive:

The Office of Research Services (ORS) would like to remind health researchers of the upcoming competition for the CIHR Project Grant Program. This program was designed to capture ideas with the greatest potential to advance health-related fundamental or applied knowledge, health care, health systems, and/or health outcomes. A summary of the program is provided below.
Objectives
- To support a diverse portfolio of health-related research and knowledge translation projects at any stage, from discovery to application, including commercialization;
- To promote relevant collaborations across disciplines, professions, and sectors; and
- To contribute to the creation and use of health-related knowledge.

The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) recently announced the launch of a new funding opportunity through the Health System Research Fund (HSRF): The Targeted Call for Patient-Oriented Research in Mental Health and Addictions. A summary is provided below.
Objectives
To solicit and fund focused research applications within MOHLTC priority areas. This new call will focus on Patient-Oriented Research in Mental Health and Addictions.

The Office of Research Services would like to remind you of the upcoming deadline for the SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants competition. These grants were introduced to better address the short-term research needs, challenges and opportunities facing organizations in the not-for-profit, public and private sectors.
Objectives
- To provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector;
- To respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors; and
- To allow non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers to access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.
SSHRC welcomes applications involving Aboriginal research, as well as those involving research-creation.
SSHRC invites all applicants to review Imagining Canada’s Future’s six future challenge areas and subquestions, and to consider addressing one or more of these areas in their research proposal.

Research on the Responsible Conduct of Research

GrantsSolutions.gov recently announced that the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) and the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) are soliciting applications under the following program: Research on the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR).
Objectives
- To solicit applications for projects to conduct innovative research related to the prevention of research misconduct, protection of whistleblowers, and the furtherance of research integrity in the country and internationally.
- To further develop the evidence base for ORI and others to create or modify educational programs to encourage the responsible conduct of research.
Specifically, the ORI seeks to:
- Identify risk factors that make misconduct more likely;
- Create an evidence base for proactive interventions;
- Build on lessons learned through previous research and the experiences of those who have been involved in guiding research misconduct proceedings; and
- Support the development of tools that can be used to more easily identify research misconduct in images and statistical results.

Mitacs Globalink Research Award

Mitacs is accepting applications for its competitive international research funding opportunity for student travel from Canada. The Mitacs Globalink Research Award funds collaborations between senior undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members at a university overseas. A summary is provided below.
Objectives
- To offer senior undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in 12-to-24-week research projects supervised by professors at accredited universities in the following Mitacs partner countries: Australia, Brazil, China, EU member countries (In France, both universities and Inria Research Centres are eligible host institutions), Israel, India, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, United Kingdom and United States.
