A Great Reason to Apply for SSHRC, CIHR, or NSERC Funding!
Now is a really great time to be putting your hat in the ring with the Federal Tri-council Granting agencies, as the Tri-Agencies (SSHRC, CIHR, and NSERC) recently announced plans to inject an additional $925M over five years into investigator-initiated research. For SSHRC alone, the projection is that this will represent an additional $54.8M/YR for the next five years.
Likewise, the recent SSHRC Insight Grant competition success rates were at a six year high:
LA&PS’s success rate was 63%
York’s overall success rate was 50%, and
nationally the success rate was 47.3%
This broke down in the following ways:
Stream A (2-5 YR projects, $7 - $100K): 51.58% success rate
Stream B (2- 5 YR projects, $100 - $400K): 43.49% success rate

CIHR Project Scheme: What You Need to Know

An Overview of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

This workshop discusses the nature of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and highlights a framework for a more systematic inquiry into teaching and learning.
Designing an Ethical SoTL Study
Time: 10am-12pm, August 8

In this workshop, we will consider the ethical requirements of a SoTL study and discuss how study design can alleviate ethical concerns in situations where one’s students are also their subjects of research. We will explore different research designs in light of what can realistically and ethically be studied within the confines of one’s classroom.

LA&PS Travel Grant for Dissemination
Deadline: August 1, Nov 1
Description: LA&PS offers this grant to offset costs associated with the public dissemination of research, scholarship, or creativity. Eligibility: Full-time YUFA faculty members and senior scholars in LA&PS. In the case of CLAs and SRCs, travel must also occur within the term of the appointment. Applications must be submitted in advance of the presentation.
SSHRC Conference Opportunity Grants Program (ORS, Passport York Login)
Deadlines: August 1, Nov 1
To provide assistance for attendance at national and international scholarly conferences for which the applicant is giving a paper, making a poster presentation, or featured at a solo or 2 person opening of an exhibition, a principal screening, premier performance of dance, theatre or musical production.
LA&PS Seed Grant for Collaborative Research Initiatives
Deadlines: September 15
Description: LA&PS full-time faculty members are invited to apply for seed funding to build new research collaborations with scholarly and/or community partners by supporting the specific costs associated with bringing key partners together to explore and develop new research and research funding opportunities. These initiatives must involve at least one LA&PS faculty member working with collaborators, who can be faculty or external community members (locally or globally). The funding is designed to offset costs associated with bringing the collaborators together for a preliminary planning meeting or small-scale workshop.
Value: Up to $5,000
Contract Faculty Research Grants Fund (CUPE)
Deadline: October 1 (research grants only)
Description: To encourage individual research and study by defraying research costs. Value: Research grants – up to $8,000. Release time course directorship grants – salary equivalent to one full-course directorship. Duration: One year.
Contract Faculty Conference Travel Fund (CUPE)
Deadline: October 1
Description: To support contract faculty members who are giving papers; have been asked to give commentaries or to chair sessions; or are attending conferences. Eligible expenses include travel, registration, accommodation and subsistence. Duration: No more than one grant per year.
Value: Up to $2,000

SSHRC: Some Changes to Fall Deadlines
Please be advised that SSHRC has announced changes to some fall deadlines:
- Partnership Grants – Stage 2 (Deadline moved up to October 29, 2018)
- Partnership Development Grants (Deadline moved up to November 15, 2018).
Royal Society of Canada Updates
The RSC has issued the following updates:
- The nomination guide for Fellowship has been revised by the RSC Task Force on Nominating and Selecting Fellows, and it can be found here. A nomination guide for the College should be available next year.
- The nomination period for the College will be moved forward to align with the nomination period for Fellowship. This will allow the entire RSC nomination process to be co-ordinated on the same schedule.
- The nomination period for the 2019 competitions (FRSC and College) will open September 4 and close December 1, 2018.
Message from Tri-Agencies on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR will now ask all applicants to grant, scholarship, and fellowship programs to provide information on their age, gender, Indigenous identity, and/or status as a member of a visible minority group, and/or as a person with a disability.
Canada is at its best when we welcome all talented people to be part of the science and research community. The federal granting agencies are committed to strengthening equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to make Canada a world leader in research and development in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, and social sciences and humanities.

Changes to the Aid to Scholarly Journals Program
SSHRC has implemented new parameters for the Aid to Scholarly Journals (ASJ) funding opportunity in 2018 that demonstrate SSHRC’s commitment to the government’s Open Science agenda; including the adoption of an open access model (full or 12-month embargo period); providing funding for innovation as well as an incentive for journals to switch to Canadian not-for-profit content and distribution platforms in order to assist in the maintenance and development of this sector in Canada.
Key changes:
- requirement that journals be fully Open Access (OA) or have an embargo period no greater than 12 months
- transition period of 2 years available to comply with OA requirement
- higher per-article funding rate for journals that do not charge fees to publish OA ($1,050 vs. $850)
- $5K per annum available for both journal innovation and to contribute to costs associated with Canadian content and distribution platforms*
- SSHRC will open eligibility to journals of which at least 1/3 of the core editorial board is affiliated with a Canadian institution and/or to journals that can demonstrate that their titles are owned by Canadian not-for-profit organizations.

CIHR- “Ask me Anything” Webinar with Adrian Mota

CIHR has released an update regarding the Foundation Grant Program.
Mitacs Accelerate
Applicants working with Canadian businesses and/or eligible not-for-profit organizations are invited to apply for internship co-funding through the Mitacs Accelerate internships program as a component of their project’s training of graduate students and/or postdoctoral researchers. Grant holders in the following funding opportunities are automatically preapproved for Mitacs Accelerate internships: Insight Grants, Partnership Development Grants, Partnership Engage Grants, and Partnership Grants (Stage 2).
SSHRC Seeking Feedback on Research Data Management Policy
Following engagement with the research community over the past year, the agencies invite institutions, associations, organizations and individuals to comment on the draft policy and its usefulness in advancing data management practices in Canada. While all feedback is welcome, the agencies are specifically interested in comments on:
- the impact of the suggested requirements (in section 3) for researchers, research communities and research institutions;
- the ability of institutions and researchers to comply with those requirements;
- the extent to which researchers and disciplinary communities are adopting data management best practices, including the use of data management plans;
- the extent to which institutions are developing data management strategies, and what they have learned in doing so; and
- the ideal timeline for implementing the policy.

The Social Sciences and Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), recently launched the Indigenous Research Capacity and Reconciliation – Connection Grants, a special call which invites proposals from applicants affiliated with First Nations, Métis and Inuit not-for-profit organizations, as well as with other not-for-profit organizations or Canadian postsecondary institutions in any discipline. A summary is provided below.
Objectives
To support interdisciplinary events and outreach activities to engage and exchange knowledge on successful ways of conducting Indigenous research that are transformative and contribute to reconciliation, including holistic, interdisciplinary and distinction-based approaches
Applicants are encouraged to submit projects that are holistic and interdisciplinary, and that reflects the full range of collaboration across disciplines and subject areas pertaining to the social sciences and humanities; natural sciences and engineering; and health and wellness.
Applicants are encouraged to organize events and outreach activities that address one or more of the following interrelated themes:
- Supporting Indigenous Talent and Research Careers
- Engaging Indigenous Knowledge
- Mobilize Knowledge and Partnerships for Reconciliation

SSHRC Aid to Scholarly Journals

To support Canadian scholarly dissemination by offering a contribution to enable journals to explore innovative activities as well as to help them to defray the costs associated with publishing scholarly articles, digital publishing and journal distribution on Canadian not-for-profit platforms.
Aid to Scholarly Journals grants are meant to:
- increase dissemination, discoverability and readership of original research results in the social sciences and humanities through Canadian scholarly journals;
- leverage significant federal investments in digital scholarly publishing infrastructure;
- assist journals as they seek to take advantage of developments in digital technologies and innovative practices; and
- encourage the transition to open access models of publishing.
The applicant must be the editor-in-chief of the journal or, in the case of an editorial collective, one of the editors. The applicant must be a faculty member of an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution. The applicant assumes responsibility for the grant.

The Office of Research Services would like to remind you of the upcoming deadline for the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Engage Grants competition. These grants were introduced to better address the short-term research needs, challenges and opportunities facing organizations in the not-for-profit, public and private sectors. A summary is provided below.
Objectives
- To provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector;
- To respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors; and
- To allow non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers to access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.
SSHRC welcomes applications involving Aboriginal research, as well as those involving research-creation.
SSHRC invites all applicants to review Imagining Canada’s Future’s six future challenge areas and subquestions, and to consider addressing one or more of these areas in their research proposal.

Canada-US Fulbright Program: Awards for Canadian Scholars

ICLR and MEOPAR Call for Proposals – 2018 Spring Flooding

The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) and the Marine Environmental Observation Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR) Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) recently launched a Call for Proposals (CFP) – 2018 Spring Flooding. Social scientists are invited to deploy to a disaster-affected area in the aftermath of an extreme event to collect perishable data. This joint funding opportunity is being made available under the ICLR Quick Response Program (QRP) and MEOPAR’s Prompt Data Collection Program (PDC.
Objectives
To support research that will learn from disaster events in order to better prevent disasters and protect communities in the future.
Potential research topics that may receive funding through the program include:
- Identification of opportunities during recovery to increase resilience to future events;
- Evacuation recommendations vs. residents’ perceived danger;
- Evaluation of the influence of prior events on stakeholder behaviour;
- Analysis of stakeholder perception of risk relative to the actual risk;
- Study of the risks associated with simplification bias;
- Identification of the specific authorities that had the greatest influence over behaviour;
- Household-level recovery issues;
- Communication between emergency management officials and residents;
- Communication of information about property damage;
