Seeking your expertise: Prioritizing Future Challenges for Canada
Canada’s three research granting agencies, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC), and the Canada Foundation for Innovation are seeking your expertise to help prioritize which future challenges identified through a recent horizon scan are considered most important for Canada.
Outcomes from this consultation may also be leveraged to support the priorities of the Canada Research Coordinating Committee, notably to advance efforts in identifying key emerging research areas. Stakeholders from all four agencies are invited to participate in this consultation.

LA&PS Seed Grant for Collaborative Research Initiatives
Deadlines: September 15
Description: LA&PS full-time faculty members are invited to apply for seed funding to build new research collaborations with scholarly and/or community partners by supporting the specific costs associated with bringing key partners together to explore and develop new research and research funding opportunities. These initiatives must involve at least one LA&PS faculty member working with collaborators, who can be faculty or external community members (locally or globally). The funding is designed to offset costs associated with bringing the collaborators together for a preliminary planning meeting or small-scale workshop.
Value: Up to $5,000
Contract Faculty Research Grants Fund (CUPE)
Deadline: October 1 (research grants only)
Description: To encourage individual research and study by defraying research costs. Value: Research grants – up to $8,000. Release time course directorship grants – salary equivalent to one full-course directorship. Duration: One year.
Contract Faculty Conference Travel Fund (CUPE)
Deadline: October 1
Description: To support contract faculty members who are giving papers; have been asked to give commentaries or to chair sessions; or are attending conferences. Eligible expenses include travel, registration, accommodation and subsistence. Duration: No more than one grant per year.

SSHRC Research Opportunity Grants Program (ORS)

To provide support to full-time faculty, professional librarians and current Postdoctoral Fellows for stand-alone, small-scale projects and for projects that will lead to the development of larger SSHRC applications or other external funding.

LA&PS Travel Grant for Dissemination

Description: LA&PS offers this grant to offset costs associated with the public dissemination of research, scholarship, or creativity. Eligibility: Full-time YUFA faculty members and senior scholars in LA&PS. In the case of CLAs and SRCs, travel must also occur within the term of the appointment. Applications must be submitted in advance of the presentation.
SSHRC Conference Opportunity Grants Program (ORS)

To provide assistance for attendance at national and international scholarly conferences for which the applicant is giving a paper, making a poster presentation, or featured at a solo or 2 person opening of an exhibition, a principal screening, premier performance of dance, theatre or musical production.
Mariano A. Elia Research Fund (ORS)

To support small-scale research projects where a significant contribution to Italian-Canadian studies will be made. Eligible expenses include research costs and travel to conferences.
Minor Research Grant (LA&PS Faculty Council)

The adjudicated vehicle through which LA&PS dispenses the YUFA Faculty/Library Research Grant Funding and the YUFA Junior Faculty/Librarian Fund. Funding for research projects, eligible expenses include personnel, research travel, subsistence costs. Eligibility: An individual is eligible to receive one research grant every 2 fiscal years.

York Indigenous Incentive Grant (VPRI) (Passport York Login)

Description: The York Indigenous Incentive Grant provides support for the development of research grant applications, related to Indigenous priorities and needs, to external sources as articulated in our Strategic Research Plan (SRP). Its main purpose will be to defray costs associated with applications for standard programs of research (including but not limited to NSERC Discovery, CIHR, SSHRC Connection Grants, SSHRC Insight and Insight Development Grants, and SSHRC Partnership Development Grants). While the scale of initiatives supported may vary according to discipline, all proposals must clearly demonstrate the intended external source of support.

LA&PS Research Events Fund

Description: This fund supports events that engage LA&PS community members in fruitful exchanges with other members of the York community, scholars and students from outside of York, or individuals and organizations that form part of the University's neighbouring communities. LA&PS faculty members (YUFA, CUPE, or retired), as well as graduate students and post-doctoral fellows associated with LA&PS's academic units, are welcome to apply to this fund.

The Insight Grants funding opportunity supports research proposed by scholars and judged worthy of funding by their peers and/or other experts. Insight Grant research initiatives may be undertaken by an individual researcher or a team of researchers working in collaboration.

The Office of Research Services would like to remind you of the upcoming deadline for the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Engage Grants competition. These grants were introduced to better address the short-term research needs, challenges and opportunities facing organizations in the not-for-profit, public and private sectors. A summary is provided below.
Objectives
- To provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector;
- To respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors; and
- To allow non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers to access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.
SSHRC welcomes applications involving Aboriginal research, as well as those involving research-creation.
SSHRC invites all applicants to review Imagining Canada’s Future’s six future challenge areas and subquestions, and to consider addressing one or more of these areas in their research proposal.

Grand Challenges Canada - Stars in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

Grand Challenges Canada recently launched the Stars in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights request for proposals (RFP). This initiative seeks bold ideas for products, services and implementation models that could transform how persistent challenges in sexual and reproductive health and rights are addressed in low-and middle-income countries. A summary is provided below.
Objectives
- To support Bold Ideas for Big Impact on sexual and reproductive health and rights from innovators in eligible countries (as outlined in Section 4.1 of the RFP).
- To seek bold ideas that can easily be implemented in low-and middle-income countries that focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Of particular interest to Grand Challenges Canada are innovations that both prevent and respond to:
1. Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, including innovations that focus on:
- Female genital mutilation and cutting
- Sexual assault, including post-rape care
- Intimate partner violence
- Trafficking and exploitation
Pathways of particular interest are innovations that:
- Target men and boys, adolescent girls and/or young women

Artificial Intelligence Industry Partnership Fund

Description: Innovation York and NRC-IRAP are delighted to announce the 2nd call of a terrific funding program to support Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Machine Learning collaborative research projects for industry and York University researchers. This funding program is open to all Canadian SMEs that have been in business for at least a year, with up to 500 employees, who are capable of exploiting the results of the research. It is an excellent opportunity for companies to explore the feasibility of employing AI/ML in their business – don’t be shy! Researchers – if you have used up your NSERC Engage, this is a terrific way to initiate a new partnership, or continue the support you are giving to your industry partners.
Artificial Intelligence Industry Partnership Fund – funded by NRC-IRAP, offered in collaboration with York University.
Applicants: Canadian SMEs, who are, or will be, partnered with YorkU faculty members
Funding Amount: Up to $10,000 in cash per selected research project (no funding to industry partners).
Project Length: 2 to 4 months
Use of Funds: To execute industry-driven research projects in Artificial Intelligence / Deep Learning / Machine Learning in support of industry-academia partnerships. The funds can be used toward student stipend and project materials. Travel, living expenses and seminar costs are ineligible.
Eligibility
- The industry partner must be a Canadian SME with up to 500 employees, capable of exploiting the results of the research.
- The industry partner must be in business for a minimum of one year.
- The research project must be jointly supervised by the faculty member and the industry partner, with the work being performed by Masters, PhD or PostDoc.
Intellectual Property
- All prior intellectual property belongs to the inventor/owner. As required by IRAP, all intellectual property developed under the project belongs to the industry partner.
Impact
For these programs, we anticipate the impact for the company will be a combination of the following, depending on the individual project:
- Proof of Concept or working prototype
- Recommended Machine Learning models and algorithms
- Assessment of company’s existing dataset and recommended data strategy
The goal is to have projects funded under this program evolve into larger long-term initiatives.
Process: Completed application word document proposals must be submitted by email to cgiblon@yorku.ca by September 27, 2018 by 4pm. Once the proposal is submitted, a review panel comprised of three representatives, one from Innovation York, one from IRAP, and an independent reviewer will review it for eligibility and quality. The Proposal will be ranked based on (a) research description, (b) project plan and (c) company plans for commercialization. The funding will be awarded to the top proposals.

SSHRC Connection Grants

The Office of Research Services would like to remind you of the upcoming deadline for the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Connection Grants competition.
These Grants support workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, summer institutes, or other events or outreach activities that facilitate:
- disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary exchanges in the humanities and social sciences;
- scholarly exchanges between those working in the social sciences and humanities and those working in other research fields;
- intersectoral exchanges between academic researchers in the humanities and social sciences and researchers and practitioners from the public, private and/or not-for-profit sectors; and/or
- international research collaboration and scholarly exchanges with researchers, students and non-academic partners from other countries.

They provide support over one to three years to teams/partnerships, led by a project director, to:
- develop research and/or related activities in the social sciences and humanities, including knowledge mobilization and the meaningful involvement of students and emerging scholars, by fostering new partnerships with existing and/or potential partners; or
- design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities that may result in best practices or models that either can be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level.

SSHRC Partnership Grants
INTERNAL NOTICE OF INTENT
All researchers planning to apply to the SSHRC Partnership Grants program – Letter of Intent phase – are required to submit an Internal Notice of Intent (iNOI) to Diana Frasca, SIRI Specialist in the Office of Research Services (ORS) no later than 9am on November 23, 2018. iNOI packages will be reviewed by the Strategic Project and Opportunity Review Team (SPORT), as well as Diana Frasca, and reviews will be returned to Project Directors by December 14, 2018.
Please Note: Because SSHRC Partnership Grants are institutional awards and require the support of researchers’ respective Departments, Faculties, Organized Research Units (ORU), and the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation (VPRI), the iNOI package should be accompanied by confirmed commitments. In order to secure these commitments, all researchers should notify their Department, Faculty Research Office, ORU, and Diana Frasca as soon as possible about their intention to apply (ideally in September). Doing so will both streamline the process of securing supports for the partnership and ensure that researchers receive adequate support in application preparation.

Program Description: Partnership Grants provide support for new and existing formal partnerships over four to seven years to advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities through mutual co-operation and sharing of intellectual leadership, as well as through shared resources as evidenced by cash and/or in-kind contributions.

Traditional Awards are open to Canadian scholars in all fields and are designed to enable emerging and established scholars, post-doctoral researchers and experienced professionals to conduct research, teach, or undertake a combination of both activities for one semester or a full academic year at any university or research center of their choice in the United States.
Visiting Chairs Program The Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program provides the opportunity for outstanding Canadian scholars to lecture and/or conduct research in the United States.
CMHC-SSHRC Joint Initiative: Collaborative Housing Research Network

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) in partnership with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), recently launched a new joint initiative aimed at funding research related to housing in order to set the stage for the creation of a Collaborative Housing Research Network. A summary is provided below.
Objectives
To create the Collaborative Housing Research Network (CHRN) which will be an independent, Canada-wide collaboration of academics and community partners focused on holistic research housing conditions, needs and outcomes in the following thematic priority areas of the National Housing Strategy (NHS):
- Housing for those in greatest need;
- Community Housing Sustainability;
- Northern Housing;
- Sustainable Housing and Communities;
- Balanced Supply of Housing.
This first of this two-stage competition will be through the SSHRC Partnership Development Grants Program and successful applicants will be invited to submit a proposal at the second stage, through the SSHRC Partnership Grants Program.
This funding opportunity offers two types of funded projects for individual teams that would potentially constitute the anticipated Network:
- Thematic Research Nodes will bring together a unified group of researchers and other stakeholders. Each node will be coordinated by a project director and responsible to focus on one thematic research area – aligned with the National Housing Strategy priority areas of action;
These individual teams, the nodes, would be linked together, via the National Knowledge Mobilization Hub, in a “network of networks” that, through research activities and creating knowledge will be greater then the sum of its parts. Nodes will be expected to work together directly with each other, in addition to connecting through the hub.
- The Hub will coordinate research collaboration and planning internally between the nodes, as well as externally to academia, government and the housing community. It will manage reporting and focus on knowledge mobilization within the network and externally. External knowledge mobilization will include developing and managing a website including a blog and other related activities.

Mitacs Globalink Research Award

Students wishing to travel in January 2019 with $6,000 in GRA support should submit their applications by September 30, 2018. Students can submit applications at any time, but are encouraged to apply at least 16 weeks prior to their planned departure.
Mitacs is accepting applications for its competitive international research funding opportunity. The Mitacs Globalink Research Award funds collaborations between senior undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members at a university overseas. A summary is provided below.
Objectives
To offer senior undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in 12-to-24 week research projects supervised by professors at accredited universities in the following Mitacs partner countries: Australia, Brazil, China, EU member countries (in France, both universities, Inria Research Centres are eligible as host institutions), India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, United Kingdom, and United States.
Value
Approved recipients will receive funds to support student travel and accommodation expenses, research-related expenses, and student stipend. Funding amounts vary by international partner and host country.

ICLR and MEOPAR Call for Proposals – 2018 Spring Flooding

The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) and the Marine Environmental Observation Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR) Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) recently launched a Call for Proposals (CFP) – 2018 Spring Flooding. Social scientists are invited to deploy to a disaster-affected area in the aftermath of an extreme event to collect perishable data. This joint funding opportunity is being made available under the ICLR Quick Response Program (QRP) and MEOPAR’s Prompt Data Collection Program (PDC.

To support research that will learn from disaster events in order to better prevent disasters and protect communities in the future.
Potential research topics that may receive funding through the program include:
- Identification of opportunities during recovery to increase resilience to future events;
- Evacuation recommendations vs. residents’ perceived danger;
- Evaluation of the influence of prior events on stakeholder behaviour;
- Analysis of stakeholder perception of risk relative to the actual risk;
- Study of the risks associated with simplification bias;
- Identification of the specific authorities that had the greatest influence over behaviour;
- Household-level recovery issues;
- Communication between emergency management officials and residents;
- Communication of information about property damage;
- Communication between insurance companies and policyholders;
- Effectiveness of local emergency management networks;
- Networks and partnerships formed between various groups as part of the disaster relief process;
- Social media use during disasters;
- Understanding the spatial planning and reconstruction of affected households/neighbourhoods;
- Adoption of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in the built environment;
- Health issues of residents and relief personnel;
- Community recovery and household recovery capacity;
- Options for reducing the risk of future events;
- Other topics as proposed by the researcher(s).
