SSHRC Exchange – KMb Grant Program (New)

LA&PS Travel Grant for Dissemination

Description: LA&PS offers this grant to offset costs associated with the public dissemination of research, scholarship, or creativity. Eligibility: Full-time YUFA faculty members and senior scholars in LA&PS. In the case of CLAs and SRCs, travel must also occur within the term of the appointment. Applications must be submitted in advance of the presentation.

Mariano A. Elia Research Fund (ORS)

Deadline: November 1, March 1

To support small-scale research projects where a significant contribution to Italian-Canadian studies will be made. Eligible expenses include research costs and travel to conferences.

Minor Research Grant (LA&PS Faculty Council)

The adjudicated vehicle through which LA&PS dispenses the YUFA Faculty/Library Research Grant Funding and the YUFA Junior Faculty/Librarian Fund. LA&PS Senior Scholars’ Research Fund

• To support research visits to universities in the German state of Baden-Württemberg by faculty member at participating Ontario universities.

OCE ENCQOR Academic Technology Development Program

Objectives

The 5G (ENCQOR) Academic Technology Development Program (5G ADP) partners researchers at Ontario-based post-secondary institutions with ENCQOR Anchor Firms (Ericsson, Ciena Canada Inc., Thales Canada Inc., IBM Canada and CGI) on 5G technology development projects. 2019 Alzheimer Society Research Program Competition

Objectives

• To provide grants and award to applicants based in Canadian Universities and affiliated institutions that promise new insights into causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias (ADOD).

The Alzheimer Society Research Program (ASRP) focuses on

1. Biomedical Stream provides funding for research into basic biological mechanisms related to brain changes associated with the disease and into the identification of therapeutic agents to combat the disease. Applications relative to, for example, brain-behaviour mechanisms, biochemical changes and molecular genetics are processed in the Biomedical stream.
2. Quality of Life (QoL) is concerned with all aspects of dementia care and support. The Alzheimer Society has particular interest in the means to improve the way care is experienced by people with dementia living in long term care homes, and their families.

Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada - CFP

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) recently issued a Call for Proposals (CFP) under its 2019-20 Contributions Program and is encouraging the submission of research and knowledge translation applications that advance its strategic privacy priorities.   A summary is provided below. 

Objectives are to:

• Strengthen existing privacy research capacity in academic and not-for-profit sectors;
• Generate new knowledge and support the development of expertise in selected areas of privacy and data protection;
• Increase awareness and understanding among individuals and organizations across Canada of their privacy rights and obligations; and,
• Promote uptake and application of research results by relevant stakeholders,

This year the OPC is interested in funding proposals for the planning and organization of one or more “design jams”.

A design jam is a sprint-like event, spanning one or more days, in which a broad range of participants (computer programmers, designers, impacted individuals, etc.) come together to collaboratively address a defined problem. The goal of a design jam is to finish with one or more prototype solutions which can then be further developed and/or made available to the public.

As design jams often have a precise focus, OPC would be interested in funding one or more events that are aimed at developing new, cutting-edge consent solutions that incorporate the OPC’s Guidelines for obtaining meaningful consent.

Design jam should aim to improve how consent is obtained in the digital world.

These may include, but are not limited to:

• Consumer-facing tools: Tools that help users understand/navigate their consent choices;
• Implementation tools: Designs and/or technologies which can be used by companies to implement our guidelines;
• Industry-specific consent mechanisms: Mechanisms to help create a more consistent consent experience across an industry;
• Standardized privacy settings: Patterns that make it easier for users to understand privacy settings, by making them more consistent across services.

Canada Council for the Arts – 2019 Molson Prizes

The Canada Council for the Arts is accepting nomination for the 2019 Molson Prizes competition. Two Molson Prizes are awarded annually to distinguished individuals (one in the arts and one in the social sciences and humanities), in recognition of an exceptional contribution in those fields.  The prizes are administered by the Canada Council for the Arts in cooperation with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).  Candidates may not apply for a Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize: they must be nominated.

Canada Council for the Arts – 2019 John G. Diefenbaker Award

Objective

• The award is given annually, and it enables a distinguished German scholar to conduct research in Canada and spend brief periods gaining further experience at American Institutions. While research must be the primary activity during the award period, the award recipient will be encouraged to participate in the teaching activities of the host institution and to interact with the research communities in Canada and the United States by visiting other institutions.
• The teaching and institutional visiting activities are intended to broaden the impact of the award recipient’s visit, while enriching the visitor’s experience.

Value

$80,000 to be used by the host institution towards the payment of the salary of the visiting scholar. Additionally, a grant up to $15,000 is provided to cover the cost of travel to the Canadian host institution.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) in partnership with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), recently launched a new joint initiative aimed at funding research related to housing in order to set the stage for the creation of a Collaborative Housing Research Network.  A summary is provided below.

Objectives

To create the Collaborative Housing Research Network (CHRN) which will be an independent, Canada-wide collaboration of academics and community partners focused on holistic research housing conditions, needs and outcomes in the following thematic priority areas of the National Housing Strategy (NHS):

1. Housing for those in greatest need;

3. Northern Housing;
4. Sustainable Housing and Communities;
5. Balanced Supply of Housing.

France-Canada Research Foundation: New Scientific Collaboration Support Program

Objectives

The program aims to accomplish the following objectives:

• Support developing new expert partnerships between France and Canada,
• Promote the advancement of research and innovation,
• Prepare and structure scientific cooperation between the two countries,
• Promote researcher mobility, particularly for young researchers, and
• Provide research training for young researchers.

This program provides funds for new scientific projects jointly developed by French and Canadian teams that have never worked together before.

Note: Only five proposals will be accepted by the agency from each university.  If more than five proposals are submitted on the November 16^th deadline, ORS will coordinate an internal peer review process to select the five applications to go forward to the agency.  Applications cannot be revised after they are submitted to the France-Canada Research Fund on November 16, 2018.   As a result, the peer review committee will not provide any substantive feedback since it is not possible to incorporate the feedback in the application.

SSHRC Partnership Development Grants – November 2018 Competition

They provide support over one to three years to teams/partnerships, led by a project director, to:

• design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities that may result in best practices or models that either can be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level.

INTERNAL NOTICE OF INTENT

All researchers planning to apply to the SSHRC Partnership Grants program – Letter of Intent phase – are required to submit an Internal Notice of Intent (iNOI) to Diana Frasca, SIRI Specialist in the Office of Research Services (ORS) no later than 9am on November 23, 2018. iNOI packages will be reviewed by the Strategic Project and Opportunity Review Team (SPORT), as well as Diana Frasca, and reviews will be returned to Project Directors by December 14, 2018.

Please Note: Because SSHRC Partnership Grants are institutional awards and require the support of researchers’ respective Departments, Faculties, Organized Research Units (ORU), and the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation (VPRI), the iNOI package should be accompanied by confirmed commitments. In order to secure these commitments, all researchers should notify their Department, Faculty Research Office, ORU, and Diana Frasca as soon as possible about their intention to apply (ideally in September). Doing so will both streamline the process of securing supports for the partnership and ensure that researchers receive adequate support in application preparation.

Mitacs is accepting applications for its competitive international research funding opportunity.  The Mitacs Globalink Research Award funds collaborations between senior undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members at a university overseas.  A summary is provided below.

Objectives
To offer senior undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in 12-to-24 week research projects supervised by professors at accredited universities in the following Mitacs partner countries: Australia, Brazil, China, EU member countries (in France, both universities, Inria Research Centres are eligible as host institutions), India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, United Kingdom, and United States.
