YU Explore: Professional Exploration


Take advantage of the opportunity to connect with a York University professional in your field of interest for a day of job shadowing. Gain hands-on experience, ask questions and expand your knowledge about your chosen career path.

Apply to YU Explore’s Connect to a Professional Program to build skills for your future career. This initiative allows UNMA students to explore a field of interest through 1-on-1 mentoring and job shadowing with a York University professional in one of a variety of departments and areas of the institution. Gain insight into potential career paths before declaring your major.

Submit your Application

Submit your application by October 19 at 11:59 p.m. (job shadowing takes place during Winter Reading Week). Only 30 spots are available. Once filled, a waitlist will open.

Once applications close, our team will review them and follow up with you if clarification is needed.

What to Expect

Our team will reach out to professionals based on students' interests and do our best to find you a match (Note: it will not always be possible to find you a professional in the exact field you want but we will do our best to find you something related).

Attend a workshop from the Career Services or meet 1-1 with a Career Counsellor during the semester to prepare for the experience (Optional but highly recommended).

Matches are finalized and emails connecting the student and professional mentor are sent (*it is the student's responsibility to make the first contact within 48 business hours).

Professional mentors will set up a virtual meeting with the student to learn more about their interests and what the student can expect to experience. This information will be used by the professional mentor to plan the job-shadowing experience.

1 hour virtual pre-shadowing touch-base (30 mins preparing for the shadowing experience & 30 mins networking with the professional). (Optional)

One-day job-shadowing takes place.

Post-shadowing debrief with mentor (30 mins virtual).
