Gear up for a busy month at LA&PS! February is Black History Month, and there are plenty of events happening across campus where you can experience the rich heritage, traditions and culture of the Black community and celebrate Black Excellence. In this edition of The Scoop, learn about Black History Month events at LA&PS, study abroad opportunities, Valentine's Day activities and more.

Book Your Graduation Portrait!

Graduating class of 2025! Now is your opportunity to celebrate and commemorate your achievements with a grad portrait.  

New Paramount Studios will be at the Keele Campus and is booking student sessions.

To book your appointment:  

  1. Go to newparamount.com  

  1. Select “Book” at the top of the page  

  1. Select “York University” and “Keele Campus”  

  1. Choose your preferred date and time  

  2. Fill in your info and follow the prompts to complete your booking!  

A sitting fee of $25 is required, in cash, at the time of your photo session.

The Quadrant Journal: Call for Submissions

Do you have an essay, photos or poems you want to have published? The Quadrant, a new journal from the LA&PS Colleges coming in 2025, is accepting limited submissions until February 14 at 4:30 p.m. 

The theme for the journal is "The Way Must Be Tried."

Black History Month Poetry Contest: Call for Submissions

In honour of Black History Month, the School of Public Policy & Administration (SPPA) and the Public Policy & Administration Student Association is holding a poetry contest for all undergraduate students at York. 

Prompt: Write a poem that expresses your perspective on Black representation in the public sector. 

1st Place Prize - $150 
2nd Place Prize - $100 
3rd Place Prize - $50

The Oracle: Call for Submissions

Interested in publishing your Philosophy-related academic/research articles or creative submissions (e.g. poetry, artwork, photography) in an esteemed journal?  

Submit your work to The Oracle, an annual undergraduate Philosophy journal published and printed by Philosophia and the Department of Philosophy. 

Submissions close on March 5 and top published authors will be invited to present at The Annual Undergraduate Philosophy Conference at York in April 2025.

Explore Sustainability and Fair Trade in Costa Rica Through Two Unique Study Abroad Courses

Immerse yourself in the heart of Costa Rica’s ecological and cultural richness with two transformative courses at York University’s Las Nubes EcoCampus. The courses blend classroom learning with immersive field experiences to inspire future leaders in sustainability and global justice. 

Managing for Sustainability in Costa Rica (ADMS 4971) invites students to explore the meaning of managing sustainability through hands-on experiences in a country renowned for its biodiversity. From visiting biological reserves to engaging with community leaders and local businesses, this course examines the intersection of environmental, social and economic sustainability. 

📅 Course Dates: April 24–May 3, 2025 

The Business of Fair Trade (SOSC 4051) delves into the economic, ecological and sociolegal impacts of fair trade. Students engage with literature and firsthand experiences by visiting farming cooperatives in Costa Rica to explore the challenges small-scale farmers face in accessing global markets.  

📅 Course Dates: June 22–July 1, 2025 

Step 1: Check your eligibility and attend an info session. 

Step 2: Save your spot by March 10, 2025. Courses are capped at 25 students. Spots are considered on a first-come, first-serve basis.  

Step 3: Enrol in the course, submit forms and program fee, and attend a mandatory session.

Open Mic Night: Music, Spoken Word, Poetry, Storytelling

Vanier College Productions (VCP), in collaboration with the Children, Childhood & Youth(CCY) program, presents a Winter and (Anti) Valentine's Day themed Open Mic Night. Come together with your fellow students to enjoy and perform music, spoken word, poetryand storytelling in a casual, laid-back environment.

Sign-up to perform and showcase your voice! Performances should be approximately 3-5minutes in length and consist of anything you consider to be a form of storytelling (music, spoken word, poetry, etc).

Since September, students from VCP’s BIPOC Artist HUB have been working towards bringing this showcase to life, focusing on fantasy and the world of BIPOCAH. With exhibits that range from visual art, board games, live performances, literature and more, we hope to transport you to other worlds with our personal stories, reflections, and ideations.

Don’t miss your chance to see the exhibit, Vibrant Visions: The Art of Black Girlhood in Canada at the Atrium Gallery, TIFF Lightbox. The free exhibit runs from February 9 – 22 and presents a series of collages that explore the cultural, social, historical and geographical forces shaping the lived experiences of Black girls in Toronto and Vancouver.
