What Type of Undeclared Major are you?

Unsure what type of undeclared major you are? We can help. In the undeclared major program, there are three types of undeclared majors: Temporary Detours, Determined Achievers and True Explorers.

Find which type of undeclared major you are and the recommended next steps towards declaring your major.

Temporary Detour

First-year Undeclared Major student with an exact idea of the program you want to pursue, but your GPA is not high enough or you don't have the credits/prerequisites to enter the program of choice.

Determined Achiever

First-year Undeclared Major student with an idea of what program you want to pursue, but you don’t have the credits or prerequisites to enter the program of choice.

True Explorer

First-year Undeclared Major student with no idea of what program you want to pursue.

Temporary Detour

You’re not sure where you want to be, and you might need to pick up some prerequisites to enter the program of your interest. Your goal is to do some major exploration and meet the requirements of your program of interest.

Next Steps 

  1. Meet with a LA&PS Academic Advisor to ensure you’re on the right track.
  2. Engage with YU Explore program event, workshops and more to connect with your peers and get involved. 
  3. (First-years only) - Connect with your Peer Mentor to receive guidance, support and essential information to help you navigate York’s resources and physical campus from an experienced upper-year student. 
  4. Visit the Career Centre to explore your career options to make an informed major declaration. 
  5. Visit one or more Learning Skills Services workshops to strengthen your academic skills to support your journey through university.
  6. Declare your major!

Determined Achiever

You have a good idea of what you want to do, but lack the Grade Point Average (GPA) to pursue the program of your interest. Your goal is to increase your GPA to enter the program of your interest.

Next Steps 

  1. Meet with a LA&PS Academic Advisor to ensure you’re on the right track.
  2. Engage with YU Explore program event, workshops and more to connect with your peers and get involved.
  3. Take advantage of York’s academic resources for success such as PASS, SNACK and the Writing Centre to help support you achieve your academic goals.
  4. Visit one or more Learning Skills Services workshops to strengthen your academic skills to support your journey through university.
  5. Declare your major!

True Explorer

You have many interests and options and can’t choose just one. You want to keep all of your options open and try new things in your first year before declaring a major. Your goal is to explore your options to find the program that’s right for you.

Next Steps
