We hope your semester has been filled with inspiring courses, dedicated faculty and numerous opportunities for growth. October is also the Academic Integrity Month. The theme for this year’s event is Connecting the Community. Join us for activities and workshops to help you broaden your understanding of academic integrity at York. Our community members are there to help you achieve your academic goals.

Academic Support Initiatives in LA&PS

The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) is delighted to provide information on academic support initiatives. Student Numeracy Assistance Centre at Keele (SNACK) provides numeracy support to LA&PS students enrolled in courses involving math, statistics, Excel, and computer programming can access peer tutoring assistance either in person at Founders College, room 034, or online. Supplementary numeracy resources are also available.

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) provide an effective way for LA&PS students to achieve their academic goals and connect with peers. PASS supports a variety of courses. For a complete list, please visit the PASS program website.

For students seeking a quiet study space, the Nellie Langford Library, located at 204 Founders College, offers an inclusive, friendly, and safe environment. The library also houses a diverse collection of materials.

LA&PS Community Hub

Students are invited to come to the space to rest and recharge - chat with Peer Mentors, hang out with friends, play free games and grab a snack. Various student support pop-ups will be available along with destressing activities.

Join us every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Meet our Writer-in-Residence: Shyam Selvadurai

The Department of English hosts a Writer-in-Residence each Fall and Winter terms. This year, Shyam Selvadurai is our Fall 2023 Writer-in-Residence.

Writers-in-Residence are esteemed authors available for manuscript consultations, which might include editorial feedback and suggestions for publications.

Four meetings per week are available by appointment through Calendly.

Register for LA&PS International Peer Mentorship Program

If you have questions about your new life as a university student or need help getting support and finding resources, then the peer mentorship program at LA&PS International is for you! The program helps new students connect with an upper-year mentor and navigate your transition into university and life in Toronto.

Meet a diverse community of experienced students and get useful tips and tricks that will help you access the resources at York and LA&PS to the fullest!

Register for the Future Career Launch Series

Empower yourself with the right skills, tools and knowledge to successfully navigate and thrive in the Canadian job market. This free program offers hands-on and engaging sessions ranging from job searching strategies, resumé writing and interview preparation, to information sessions on applying for Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) and Permanent Residency (PR). 

Join us for the first session "Job Searching and Networking Strategies" on Wednesday, October 4, from 2 - 4 p.m.

Autumn Colour Walk with LA&PS International

LA&PS International Student Success Ambassadors is hosting a trip to High Park on October 13 to hike and explore the autumn leaves at High Park. Our goal is to help international students get to know each other, understand the Toronto Transit Commission routes, and explore the natural beauty of Toronto.

Bring a camera to take some quality photos to capture the memories!

To attend the Autumn Colour Walk, students must complete and submit a Photo Consent and Field Trip Waiver Form, which will be provided.

The LA&PS Internship Program is getting ready for an exciting internship offering for Winter 2024, Summer 2024 and Fall 2024.

You may be eligible and if so, it’s time to take advantage! These internships are paid, career-related and designed to help students gain valuable work experience in their field of study.

Fall Well-being Week

Our first ever Fall Well-being Week is scheduled for October 2- 6, 2023. The week’s theme is Caring for Your Mental and Emotional Health. During Well-being Week (and every week), we invite York community members to learn about and prioritize mental and emotional well-being.

You are also invited to share feedback on the Well-being Strategy Draft in one of two ways: 

Events offered during Fall Well-being Week are all free and include a mix of virtual and in-person offerings.

Submit Your ESL Research: Publish Your Work Online!

Global Voices at the Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics (DLLL) recognizes and celebrates current and former students’ accomplishments. Through the process of peer review, the Editorial Board provides students and alumni an exciting opportunity to have their works identified and published on a bi-annual basis.
